Kelvin Banks Jr. Injury Update: Exploring Longhorns OT’s availability for Texas-Georgia SEC Championship Game
The Texas Longhorns are in their first season in the SEC and are competing for the SEC Championship later today against the Georgia Bulldogs. However, the status of star offensive lineman Kelvin Banks Jr. is critical for the team's ability to play well against one of the toughest defensive teams in all of the country.
ESPN's Pete Thamel is reporting that Kelvin Banks Jr. is dealing with an ankle injury and is officially questionable for this game. If he is not able to play or cannot play the entire game, redshirt freshman Trevor Goosby will take his spot on the offensive line. Banks was limited to just seven snaps in last week's game.
According to Pro Football Focus, Kelvin Banks Jr. has a 90.3 pass-block grade and that ranks fourth in the country amongst all offensive tackles this season. His status is going to be significant regarding the Longhorns' ability to move the ball and to keep an injured quarterback in Quinn Ewers upright.
Will the Texas Longhorns win the 2024 SEC Championship?
Despite whether Texas or Georgia win the conference championship, both teams are projected to make the College Football Playoff. However, the winner will be given a top-four seed and a first-round bye while the loser likely begins the playoff on the road.
These teams played earlier this season in Texas and the Bulldogs secured a 30-15 victory. This Texas team is solid and that was their only loss in the regular season, and this game is expected to be close, as evidenced by the 2.5-point spread.
The Longhorns are favored in this game and are going to be considered the home team as they were first in the SEC and had the better record.
This game is going to be very close but remember that this is being played in Atlanta, Georgia, meaning this will essentially be a home game for the Bulldogs.
