"Kirby Smart is still Thanos": Doubt-ridden Georgia Bulldogs head coach shuts up naysayers with movie-like leadership, says CFB analyst
The Georgia Bulldogs registered their biggest win of the 2024 college football season in Week 8 as they traveled to Austin and knocked off the then-No. 1-ranked Texas Longhorns 30-15. The game was never really close as Georgia never trailed and led by as many as 23 points at halftime.
J.D. Pickell of On3 Sports compared Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart to Marvel Comics character Thanos while discussing the victory.
"The thing that we need to take away from this is whenever there is a little bit of doubt surrounding Georgia and whenever there is a narrative that Georgia is, maybe, a little bit on the decline or taking a step back, there is nobody better on the face of the planet at getting their team ready to attack, be laser focused and play a version of their best football than Kirby Smart and we keep on seeing that," Pickell said (starting at the 3:53 mark).
"The takeaway for me here is Kirby Smart is still Thanos," Pickell added. "When he wants to snap, things get crazy. That's when his team goes nuts. We kept saying Georgia played their best game defensively. Georgia did not play their best game as a football team. The scary thing is I think Georgia's best football game is very much so still out there."
Pickell added that despite winning by two scores and the defense playing great, Carson Beck was poor. He noted that if the Bulldogs starting quarterback even played decently, the game could have ended in a lopsided blowout.
Will the Georgia Bulldogs reach the College Football Playoff?
The Georgia Bulldogs improved to 6-1 and 4-1 in SEC play with their 30-15 victory over the Texas Longhorns in Week 8. The victory also moved them up to second in the latest AP Top 25 Poll rankings. There is still plenty of football left on their schedule, including back-to-back matchups with the No. 18 Ole Miss Rebels and No. 7 Tennessee Volunteers.
The Bulldogs' postseason odds are -1700, making them the second best in the country, after only Oregon. Georgia appears to be in a strong position to make the College Football Playoff, with five games remaining on their schedule and a potential SEC Championship game.
