After throwing an interception of their own, Ball State broke the game's silence with a pick-six from senior linebacker Brandon Berger to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Miami responded with a five-play, 75-yard touchdown drive capped off by a 34-yard connection from Brett Gabbert to Reggie Virgil to tie the game at 7-7, with under six minutes remaining in the opening period.
