Mike Norvell contract buyout 2024: How much does FSU owe its head coach? Closer look at latest firing rumors
Last year, the Florida State Seminoles under coach Mike Norvell were undefeated before being snubbed for the College Football Playoff. This season, they have started 0-3. Two contrasting seasons see Norvell on the firing line.
This is the second time in five years Norvell's program has started the season 0-3. This has got everyone in the football world talking about him possibly getting fired before the season ends. But how much would it cost the Seminoles if they were to go that way? Let's find out.
How much is Mike Norvell's contract buyout in 2024?
Mike Norvell, who flirted with going to Alabama following Nick Saban's retirement, stayed with the Seminoles and signed a 10-year extension worth over $84 million in January, per USA Today.
However, after starting the season with losses against Georgia Tech, Boston College and Memphis, the program could look to buy out his contract. That would be costly for them, as they would have to pay him $65 million or 85% of his base salary and incentives for the remainder of the contract.
After joining the program in 2020, Norvell has an overall record of 69-35, with him going 1-4 in Bowl games. During this stretch, he won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship last season.
Mike Norvell's performance with the Seminoles:
- 2020: 3-6 (3-6)
- 2021: 5-7 (4-4)
- 2022: 10-3 (5-3)
- 2023: 13-1 (8-0) Won ACC
- 2024: 0-3 (0-2)
Danny Kanell has a suggestion for Mike Norvell for what's left of 2024 season
Apart from Mike Norvell, questions are also being raised about DJ Uiagalelei, the program's starting quarterback.
The senior quarterback has thrown for two interceptions as opposed to one touchdown pass while also getting sacked eight times. His passing completion rate is only 56.6%. It might be time for Norvell to look beyond Uiagalelei, according to CBS Sports' Danny Kanell.
After the 20-12 loss to Memphis, in which the quarterback threw one interception, Kanell wrote on X:
"I hate benching guys....BUT I think you have to let DJ sit down and see what the offense looks like with Brock Glenn."
Interestingly, if such a move were to take place, it would hurt Uiagalelei since he is in his last year of eligibility. There's a chance he might not even get drafted if he doesn't improve his level of play.
