After an exchange of punts from both sides, the Gophers capitalized on a fumble recovery, kicking a field goal to take a 3-0 lead with six minutes remaining in the first quarter. The two sides exchanged punts again before Illinois tied the game at 3-3 with a field goal following an 11-play, 65-yard drive.
Minnesota responded to Illinois' field goal with an eight-play, 65-yard touchdown drive, highlighted by a 29-yard run to the endzone from Darius Taylor. Illinois then countered with a seven-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, highlighted by a 42-yard touchdown run from Josh McCray.
