Coach Bill Belichick's signing with the North Carolina Tar Heels has sparked excitement among college football fans. He signed a five-year deal worth $50 million. Belichick led the New England Patriots to record six Super Bowl wins alongside Tom Brady.
On Thursday, he arrived at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, for his first press conference as the Tar Heels coach. Fans reacted positively to a video of him smiling and walking to the venue on X/Twitter, with one supporter joking that he was an imposter.
"Nah he smiled, that's an imposter," one fan wrote.
"North Carolina Football is now more relevant than I can remember if ever," another fan wrote.
"Boston guy here. UNC fan now! Love Bill. You guys definitely made the right decision hiring the GOAT! His son is no slouch either. Steve is going to be a great HC when his time comes," a supporter commented.
"Seeing Bill smile makes me happy, wish you nothing but success coach!," another fan wrote.
"Hey @UNCFootball, if you take care of Bill, yall will get the championships. Don't let his age fool you." a fan replied.
"Wow. It's really happening!," a sixth fan wrote.
North Carolina Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham spoke at the press conference about his decision to hire the new coach. He feels Belichick is a perfect fit for the team.
"Coach Belichick has demonstrated his passion for teaching, for coaching, and for lifelong learning, and he's an absolute perfect fit for us at this time in the history of the University. In the history of college sports," Cunningham said.
"Dream Come True": Bill Belichick shares what it means to him joining North Carolina
During the press conference, Belichick spoke openly about what it meant for him to coach for the team. He showed the media a sweatshirt from his father, Steve Belichick, from when he coached for North Carolina. He thanked Cunningham and said he always wanted to be a college football coach.
"I've always wanted to coach in college football and it just never really worked out," Belichick said. "I had some good years in the NFL, so that was okay, but this is really kind of a dream come true. I grew up in college football with my dad as the coach at Navy for 50 years. So, as a kid, all I knew was college football and so it's great to come back home to Carolina and back in an environment that I really grew up in."
During his tenure, he will attempt to help the Tar Heels become relevant in college football and potentially win a College Football Playoff National Championship.
