Nebraska makes a massive mid-season move after Matt Rhule experiment takes hit after hit
Matt Rhule's Nebraska Cornhuskers had a bright start to the 2024 season, but have now lost their past three games. With the Cornhuskers in crisis mode, the team has made some changes to its coaching staff.
On Tuesday, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that Nebraska was appointing Dana Holgorsen as its new offensive consultant. He will work closely with the Cornhuskers' offensive staff and his role is expected to evolve as we enter the final few weeks of the regular season.
Holgorsen spent eight seasons as head coach at West Virginia from 2011 to 2018, posting a 61-41 record with the Mountaineers. He then had a five-year sojourn at Houston, leading the Cougars to a 31-28 record.
Prior to accepting the role as an offensive consultant at Nebraska, Holgorsen worked as an analyst and advanced scout at TCU.
Across 13 seasons as a head coach, Holgorsen has a 92-69 overall record. He also helped develop some top quarterbacks in college football as a coach and offensive coordinator, including Graham Harrell, Case Keenum, Brandon Weeden, Geno Smith and Will Grier.
Notably, Holgorsen and Rhule have faced off against each other twice in the past.
In 2017, Rhule was the coach for Baylor and his team suffered a 38-36 defeat against Holgorsen's Mountaineers. They met again the following year, and this time, Holgorsen's West Virginia recorded an even more convincing win, beating Baylor 58-14.
Now, it will be interesting to see how Rhule and Holgorsen work together at Nebraska to salvage what is left of the 2024 season.
Matt Rhule's Nebraska will aim to finish the regular season on a high
Matt Rhule's Nebraska (5-4, 2-4 Big 12) will aim to end the 2024 season on a high after a disappointing few weeks. The Cornhuskers will have a primary aim of securing bowl eligibility and they can do that with one more win.
Nebraska has an off in Week 11 and will resume action against the USC Trojans (4-5, 2-5 in Big Ten) on Nov. 16. The Cornhuskers will host Wisconsin (5-4, 3-3 in Big Ten) in their penultimate regular-season game on Nov. 23 before traveling to face Iowa (6-3, 4-2 in Big Ten) on Nov. 29.
