"No one rates trash fsu" "fsu was undefeated": CFB world divided over Greg Sankey's subtle jab at Seminoles' playoff snub
On Thursday, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey made a subtle jab at the Florida State Seminoles during a radio interview. The Seminoles had an undefeated regular season and won the ACC in 2023 but were denied a spot in the College Football Playoff.
Speaking on Thursday, Sankey referenced the actions of many Seminoles fans after they had their undefeated season.
"Georgia was one of the best four teams (in the nation) and didn't get in (the Playoff). But you didn't see us jumping up and down and complaning and hanging national championship banners."
Here is how college football fans reacted to his comments.
Some fans agree with the comments made by Greg Sankey and have shared their dislike toward the Seminoles:
"No one rates trash fsu 😂," said this fan.
"FSU is a poverty program," said another fan.
"FSU being fitted for a body bag," said a third fan.
However, these fans disagree with the comments made by Sankey and believe that Florida State deserved its spot in the CFP.
"Well FSU was undefeated, so there’s that," said this fan.
"FSU was undefeated btw," wrote another fan.
"Still blows my mind how people make FSU the bad guy for being snubbed like literally nobody else had been before and then trying to criticize FSU for being upset. We all know any other institution would have had the EXACT same reaction if the shoe was on the other foot," wrote a third fan.
"Remind me again how many games FSU lost before the final CFP rankings came out..." said this fan.
Some fans have criticized the Georgia Bulldogs, who Sankey believed should have made the CFP over Florida State.
"Georgia also didn’t win a conference championship. At least FSU gets to hang a banner," said this fan.
"UGA struggled with bad teams, played one good team, and lost to that good team. In no way did UGA prove they were a top 4 team," said another fan.
"This is in itself complaining. Who did UGA deserve to be in over? The invitational had 2 undefeated conference champs, a team that beat UGA and the team that beat Bama. UGA didn’t deserve a thing," said this fan.
Some fans are confused over Sankey's "banner" comment.
"FSU isn't the school in the state that has a national championship marking..." said this fan.
"Florida State didn't claim, nor did they hang any damn 'national championship' banners.🛑," said another fan.
"What does that even mean? Who hung a banner? I’d be more worried about the non stop banners of uga arrests," said this fan.
What was Greg Sankey referencing in his comments?
The commissioner of the SEC was explaining the events of last season through the viewpoint of the Georgia Bulldogs. The Bulldogs had a strong season but lost in the SEC championship game to the Alabama Crimson Tide. This denied them a spot in the CFP.
However, the victory put Alabama (who had lost to the Texas Longhorns in Week 2) in the playoffs and left the undefeated Florida State out. This act annoyed many college football fans.
That is where Sankey is right. But he has made one major error in this comment, which the fans did mention in their reactions.
The Florida State Seminoles have not hung a "national championship banner" in their stadium. Greg Sankey is likely getting confused between Florida State and UCF.
Unlike the Seminoles, UCF does have a national championship banner for a championship they did not win. Like the Seminoles, the Knights did have an undefeated season where they did not reach the CFP. But, unlike Florida State, there is a large sign at FBC Mortgage Stadium that signifies their claim to a national championship they did not officially win.
