"No Saturday night Orji": CFB fans react as Michigan starts Davis Warren over Alex Orji in Week 1 game

The defending champion Michigan Wolverines are ready to begin their 2024 college football season. With JJ McCarthy leaving the program after he was selected as one of the top quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL draft, there is going to be a new quarterback under center for the program.

While many people expected it to be Alex Orji, it appears that is not the case as NBC Sports has reported that former walk-on quarterback Davis Warren will be getting the Week 1 start against the Fresno State Bulldogs.

This news came as a bit of a surprise to a lot of people but really opened eyes to the level of the Michigan Wolverines quarterback play.

"JJ McCarthy ain't walking through that door..." One user posted.
"Good thing they're not playing a great opponent," another fan quipped, referring to Fresno State.
"Tells you about the Michigan QB sitation. They don't have one that can throw a forward pass." someone commented.

This gave the opportunity for people to use some potty humor with Alex Orji's name.

"So no Orji's in the endzone?" One person commented.
"No Saturday night Orji," another posted with a corresponding GIF.
"I was hoping we'd see Orji in the end zone" another person replied.

While it appeared that Alex Orji would be on the sidelines for the entire game, he came into the Week 1 game and he would score the game's first touchdown with a three-yard passing touchdown to running back Donovan Edwards.

Will the Michigan Wolverines make the College Football Playoff this season?

After winning the national championship last season, there were significant changes to how the Michigan Wolverines look. Last year's offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore was promoted to head coach after Jim Harbaugh left for the NFL and the roster saw more than 10 players enter the 2024 NFL draft.

In a tough Big Ten Conference, it is difficult to see the Wolverines making much noise and their schedule is tough with games against the Texas Longhorns and USC Trojans within the first four weeks of the season.

Do not expect to see the Michigan Wolverines competing for the Big Ten Conference Championship this season or making a case to be one of the seven at-large teams to be picked for the College Football Playoff. This is a rebuilding year for the Wolverines and should be viewed as such.
