Notre Dame HC Marcus Freeman picks his favorite between Travis Hunter & Ashton Jeanty as Heisman fight reaches the final stage
Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter and Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty are among the frontrunners to win the Heisman Trophy this year. The two have joined Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel and Miami signal-caller Cam Ward as the four finalists who are in contention to win the coveted college football honor.
On Tuesday, Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman appeared on the "Outta Pocket with RGIII" podcast and was asked to pick between Hunter and Jeanty if he had to cast a vote for either to win the Heisman.
"I'm gonna start by saying I haven't watched either of them play a game," Freeman said. "I've seen the highlights and both are amazing players. But to see what Travis Hunter is doing on both sides of the ball, it's unprecedented."
Freeman then said he would vote for Hunter.
Freeman will soon turn his attention to Notre Dame's College Football Playoff. The No. 3 Fighting Irish (11-1, No. 5 CFP) will square off against the No. 9 Indiana Hoosiers (11-1, No. 8) in their opening game of the playoffs on Dec. 20 at Notre Dame Stadium.
A look at Travis Hunter and Ashton Jeanty's stats comparison ahead of Heisman announcement
Travis Hunter finished the regular season with 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns on 92 catches as a wideout. As a cornerback, the Colorado star tallied 31 tackles, 11 passes deflected, four interceptions and one forced fumble in 12 games.
Meanwhile, Ashton Jeanty has racked up 2,497 yards and 29 touchdowns on 344 carries. He has also contributed 116 yards and a touchdown on 20 receptions across 13 games. Notably, Jeanty has posted 100+ rushing yards in each game he played for Boise State this year.
Many believe that either Hunter or Jeanty will win the Heisman this season. Jeanty played one game more than Hunter since Boise State qualified for the Mountain West championship.
The Heisman winner will be announced on Saturday.
