Notre Dame Starting QB: Who will start for Marcus Freeman in Week 12?

The No. 8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish will look to keep their winning streak alive in Week 12. Marcus Freeman has coached the team to seven consecutive victories so far. This Saturday, Notre Dame hosts the Virginia Cavaliers. Freeman will have starting quarterback Riley Leonard active to lead the team under center.

Notre Dame (8-1) is coming off an impressive 52-3 win over the Florida State Seminoles (1-9, 1-7 ACC) in Week 11. Leonard finished the game 14-of-27 for 215 yards and one touchdown. He also proved he's a threat on the ground with 11 carries for 70 yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Leonard will enter the matchup against Virginia (5-4, 3-3 ACC) with 145 completed passes for 1,575 yards and nine touchdowns.

Freeman will look to lead his team to its ninth win as it tries to improve its chances of playing in the College Football Playoff.

Closer look at Notre Dame's depth chart

Although Riley Leonard is the starting quarterback for Notre Dame, Freeman has backup options in case he needs to look to his bench. The Fighting Irish have four other quarterbacks who could step up if Leonard gets hurt or cannot play the full game on Saturday.

The likely option to take over would be Steve Angeli, who has experience starting for Notre Dame last season. Angeli fueled their 40-8 victory over the Oregon State Beavers in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl on Dec. 29, 2023. He completed 15 of 19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns.

While Leonard is healthy for the Week 12 matchup, Angeli could be a solid replacement if necessary.
