Sam Leavitt's Stats Last Night: Arizona State QB's stats, pivotal moments and more

Redshirt freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt and his Arizona State Sun Devils defied the odds as they won 31-28 away from home on Thursday against the Texas State Bobcats at UFCU Stadium. The game was a nail-biter and the quarterback's composure helped the Sun Devils go up 3-0 this season.

In a back-and-forth game, Leavitt completed 19-of-30 passes for 246 yards, including one touchdown and one interception. Moreover, his dual-threat abilities were on display as he rushed for 40 yards on 11 carries, including a score.

Arguably the most pivotal moment for him in the game came in the second quarter when ASU was down 21-7. With 3:46 left in halftime, Leavitt threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Jordyn Tyson, which brought the Sun Devils back into the contest at 21-14.

ASU's defense then forced Texas to a 3rd & 25, forcing them to punt on the next drive. With the clock winding down, the quarterback rushed into the red zone himself to tie the game 21-21 going into halftime.

Sam Leavitt's best weapons showed up big time

Leavitt received plenty of help from two of his favorite assets on offense: running back Cam Skattebo and wide receiver Jordyn Tyson.

Skattebo took most of the rushing snaps over returning Raleek Brown and backup Jake Smith. He rushed for 62 yards on 24 carries, including two pivotal rushing scores. The per-carry yardage may have been less (2.6) but the impact was undoubtedly big.

For the passing snaps, Leavitt trusted Tyson the most. The wideout caught six receptions for 120 yards and a touchdown, averaging 20.0 yards on each reception.

Sam Leavitt's 52-yard touchdown was the highlight pass of the day, something he opened up to after last week's 30-23 win over Mississippi State (via ArizonaSports.com):

“Just rep ’em in practice. I feel like we were super close to a couple of them, should’ve had them but I don’t think it’s much more than that,” Leavitt said postgame.
“Couple pregame jitters and I just had a little too much juice, so I feel like we’re gonna come back and really start connecting on those," he added.

Beating a playoff hopeful will undoubtedly be a major boost for the Sun Devils who head to Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Saturday.
