“That’s just what they say”: Miami QB Cam Ward reluctant to label rival Shedeur Sanders as 'better' despite competitive spirit
In the first episode of his “2 Legendary” podcast, host Shedeur Sanders had Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward dive into a spirited chat about college football rankings. Despite the friendly competition, Ward hesitated to call the Colorado Buffaloes quarterback "better" on Sanders' new podcast in collaboration with Overtime.
They discussed the latest EA Sports College Football 25 rankings, with Colorado ranked 16th and Miami at 13th.
Regarding player ratings, Sanders expected an overall rating in the high 80s but ended up being one of the highest-rated players with a 93 overall. Sanders confidently said:
"Definitely high 90s... mid-90s... 94." [Timestamp - 3:10]
Miami signal-caller Ward agreed and promptly said:
“That should be a case,” he said. “I think that's a good answer.”
However, quarterbacks coach Darrell Colbert Jr., who joined the conversation, playfully asked the Miami signal-caller if that meant Sanders was better than him in the game. Ward, keeping the rivalry light, said:
“That's just what they say… I can only control what I say.”
Meanwhile, Sanders also expressed that his team's offense and defense could be rated in the high 80s or 90s. He has high hopes for a strong season under coach Deion Sanders.
Cam Ward believes NIL is not real money, the NFL is the true prize
Cam Ward had an impactful 2023 season, racking up 3,735 yards, 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His quarterback rating was 65.2, placing him 50th overall.
On Thursday, Ward was named the ACC Preseason Player of the Year, receiving 71 of 170 votes from media members covering the conference, as reported by AOL.
A fifth-year senior, Ward transferred from Washington State, where he threw for 6,963 yards and 48 touchdowns over two seasons with the Cougars. However, his focus isn't on the money from NIL deals. At the ACC Kickoff event, Ward said:
“At the end of the day, I think people get mistaken with the NIL stuff,” Ward said [H/t On3]. “They think a player’s set off NIL stuff. This NIL stuff’s not real money. It’s just starting money, I would say.”
He believes NFL money is life-changing.
“A lot of players, especially here, we like to save our stuff, because at the end of the day, life-changing money’s that NFL money,” Ward said.
After a standout season at Washington State, Ward transferred to Miami, looking to make an even bigger impact.
