"They're playing accountants and car salesmen": CFB fans lash out at Cam Ward and Miami despite undefeated record
The No. 4 Miami Hurricanes are one of the last remaining undefeated teams in FBS college football at 8-0. No. 1 Oregon, No. 8 Indiana, No. 9 BYU, and No. 18 Army are the only other programs without a loss.
The program's cultural turnaround head coach Mario Cristobal has ignited is outstanding, bringing the Hurricanes back to a level of public relevancy they have not reached in some time.
Quarterback Cam Ward, who arrived from Washington State, has been one of the most impactful transfers this season. He's thrown for 3,146 yards with 29 touchdowns, six interceptions, and a 91.7 quarterback rating to become one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy.
Despite having this level of success, there's still a belief the lack of substantial competition Miami has faced this year puts its status as a real contender into question.
No Hard Times For The Hurricanes...For Now
The Hurricanes have their undefeated record facing what is considered a relatively underwhelming ACC schedule. They have not met a ranked opponent this year and will not for the rest of the year if the current rankings hold.
Fans believe Ward and the Hurricanes will be exposed for who they actually are once they face a "real team" from the Big Ten or SEC.
Ward's individual success and numbers have led many to believe Miami can make it far in the 2024 College Football Playoff. However, he has had moments where his plays are so good they don't look repeatable, which adds worry. He moves out of the pocket at a high rate to try and get straight-line throws to players. Many fans think that he's too risky.
Breaking Down Miami's Playoff Resume
With Clemson suffering a stunning 33-21 upset loss to Louisville, the ACC is all but locked up for Miami. However, there's little margin for error as even one loss for Miami could drop the Hurricanes out of the top ten in the AP rankings given how soft their schedule is.
The Hurricanes take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets this Saturday at 12 p.m. ET.
