“Those are bad weeks in Columbus” — Ohio State HC Ryan Day looks back on bitter loss against Michigan in 2023 National Championship game
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day recently reflected on the bitter 2023 national championship game loss to Michigan, a rivalry that has been particularly challenging for him. Even though Day has an overall record of 56-8 in Columbus, his struggle against Michigan continues.
Speaking on "The Joel Klatt Show," the Buckeyes coach reflected on the bitter loss against Michigan in the national championship game.
“I don't think that any year you're any more or less motivated. But to say that those games haven't stung... I mean, of course they have.”
“Those are bad weeks in Columbus when you don't win that game. You've got to figure out what needs to get fixed to win the game. That's the bottom line, and that's what we did,” Day added. [12:30]
Day is 1-3 against Michigan. The 2023 defeat, a 30-24 setback, cost the Buckeyes dearly. The Ohio State coach knows the urgency of reversing this trend, particularly as the Buckeyes continue to invest heavily in its roster through NIL initiatives.
The Ohio State coach is aware of the mounting pressure. As the 2024 season approaches, the expectation in Columbus to beat Michigan is stronger than ever.

Michigan insider puts Ryan Day's job on hot seat
The heat is increasing for the Ohio State Buckeyes head coach, calling his job security into question. On "The Paul Finebaum Show," Michigan insider Sam Webb criticized Day for hyping Ohio State without delivering the championships to back it up.
Webb slammed Day for making excuses for the Buckeyes' losses to Michigan over the past three years.
"I think Ryan Day is a walking excuse," Webb said. "There's always a reason that they haven't achieved championship success. It's everything but Michigan was just better."
"They had the most success in the portal. They have an outstanding recruiting class... all the excuses have been removed, so he should win. I think, Buckeye fans know, if he doesn't, they're gonna be looking for a new coach,” he added. [05:30]
The Buckeyes had a massive offseason, landing key players like Caleb Downs, Will Howard and Quinshon Judkins through the transfer portal. With all these additions, the pressure is on Day to deliver results this season.
