While preseason rankings have no bearing on the College Football Playoff, several programs were snubbed from the important list. Take a look at the top five teams that were left off the 2024 preseason Coaches Poll Top 25 below.
Top 5 teams that got snubbed from the 2024 preseason Coaches Poll
#1: Washington Huskies
The Washington Huskies are fresh off an appearance in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. However, they went unranked in the 2024 preseason Coaches Poll. While they had plenty of roster turnover this offseason, including losing coach Kalen DeBoer, the Huskies have done a good job of replacing talent.
Washington received the most points of any unranked team. However, they are the only team to vie for a national title and begin the following season unranked.
#2: Virginia Tech Hokies
The Virginia Tech Hokies had a late-season turnaround in 2023. After starting 2-4, they bounced back to win five of their final seven games, including a 41-20 Military Bowl victory over the Tulane Green Wave. The Hokies will return most of their starters from last year's team and should be able to build on last year's strong finish.
#3: Florida Gators
The Florida Gators had a rough 2023, finishing just 5-7. Despite their on-field struggles, they have recruited well in recent years. 2024 was no different, as they landed five-star prospect DJ Lagway, the top quarterback prospect in the class.
While Graham Mertz had a strong 2023, he could be replaced by the freshman if he struggles. The Gators have a more talented roster this season and should reach the AP rankings at some point despite their tough schedule.
#4: Iowa State Cyclones
The Iowa State Cyclones finished at 7-6 in 2023. However, they should be expected to improve this season. The Cyclones played more freshmen than any other Big 12 program last year and returned most of their 2024 starting lineup. Further, conference play should be easier for ISU as the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns have joined the SEC.
#5: West Virginia Mountaineers
The West Virginia Mountaineers were among the biggest surprises in 2023, finishing 9-4. Similar to Iowa State, they return much of their starting lineup and should benefit from the departure of Oklahoma and Texas. The Mountaineers' offense should build off a strong season, while their solid defense should improve after they upgraded their secondary.
