"Travis Hunter is unicorn, but Ashton Jeanty is Heisman frontrunner": Former Heisman-winning QB makes eye-opening remark on Jeanty’s trophy chase
Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III believes Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty leads the Heisman Trophy race, ahead of Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter. Griffin also suggested that Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders is ahead of his teammate, in his latest list for the Heisman frontrunners.
Griffin had big praise for Hunter and Shedeur but insisted that Jeanty was out in front.
"I will keep saying this. Shedeur is balling. Travis Hunter is a unicorn. But right now, Ashton Jeanty is STILL THE HEISMAN FRONT RUNNER." Griffin tweeted in response to his list of Heisman frontrunners.
Griffin won the Heisman in 2011 in his final year at Baylor. He was drafted second overall by the then-Washington Redskins the next year. The quarterback also played one season with the Cleveland Browns in 2016 and had a three-year stint with the Baltimore Ravens.
Since retiring in 2021, Griffin has worked as an analyst. He was with ESPN for three years before the company fired him on Aug. 15.
Griffin now works on his YouTube channel "RG3 and The Ones," which he began in Sept. 2023. He interviews football stars and posts content related to the NFL and college football.
Robert Griffin's list for Heisman Trophy frontrunners ft. Ashton Jeanty and Travis Hunter
While Griffin has kept Ashton Jeanty as his top candidate to win this year's Heisman Trophy, he placed Shedeur Sanders second and Travis Hunter third.
Oregon quarterback Dan Lanning is fourth on the list, followed by Miami signal-caller Cam Ward.
Jeanty is having a season for the ages. The Boise State running back has rushed for 1,734 yards and scored 23 touchdowns on 224 carries. He has also recorded 93 yards and caught a touchdown on 16 receptions.
Meanwhile, the only other non-quarterback on Griffin's list, Hunter, believes he should win the Heisman, as he's playing expertly at two different positions for Colorado.
As a wideout, he has recorded 856 yards and caught nine touchdowns on 69 receptions. As a cornerback, he has posted 20 tackles, 13 of which have been solo tackles, recording seven passes defended, two interceptions and one forced fumble.
