WATCH: Coach Prime presents Colorado WR LaJohntay Wester with special surprise after big win
Shedeur Sanders made headlines for Colorado University (CU) during their matchup against Cincinnati. The team set a new school record by completing 15 consecutive passes to kick off the game. This was just one part of his fifth 300-yard passing game of the season. The feat not only matched his personal CU record from last season but also placed him among just three CU players to have 10 career 300-yard passing games.
Sanders' achievements are further bolstered by the performance of LaJohntay Wester, one of his primary targets on the field. In his first season with the Buffaloes, the FAU transfer has made a significant impact, recording 39 receptions for 501 yards and seven touchdowns in eight games.
Wester also recently earned the privilege of wearing the number one jersey, and the video where Coach Prime presented it to him circulated on X:
While handing Wester his new jersey, Coach Prime said:
"He wanted number one when he came here." He added, "Number one ain't something you [ask for]. It's given to you... he earned it. So I gave it to him tonight, with us going into the bye week."
Leading the Big 12 with his powerful playmaking, Sanders now ranks third nationally with 21 touchdown passes through eight games. Despite securing an impressive win over Cincinnati, Sanders downplayed any desire for Colorado to be ranked.
"We don't like that" - Coach Prime on getting ranked
During his press conference following the game, Coach Prime said:
"We don't even want to be ranked," he stated definitively. "Don't rank us, please. We don't like that. We would rather be in the dark, just chilling in the cut. We good, we cool, we straight."
Despite Coach Prime’s request, the Buffaloes rose to No. 23 in the Associated Press Poll. This marks their first ranking since Week 4 of the previous season. Colorado also placed just outside the top 25 in the coaches poll at No. 26.
However, Coach Sanders remained unfazed by these accolades:
"We're not thinking about that," he said about the rankings. "We're thinking about going into this bye week, healing some injuries, correcting some things that we didn't do well... probably giving them a day or two off. They deserve that tremendously."
The timing of the bye week is also crucial for Shedeur Sanders. He expressed gratitude for the break following his 25-30 passing performance against Cincinnati. It included 323 yards and three touchdowns.
Despite his outstanding game stats, Shedeur admitted he was feeling "a little banged up" and had recently battled through the flu.
“I was only able to practice for one day [last week]," Shedeur disclosed. "You lose weight, you lose strength... I'm just thankful that the team was all one, and we all leaned on each other for help."
Colorado now prepare for their November 9 game in Lubbock against Texas Tech. The Red Raiders are currently standing at 5-3 after a narrow 35-34 loss to TCU. They have an upcoming game against No. 11 Iowa State before hosting the Buffaloes.
