WATCH: Former Iowa State stars Brock Purdy and Breece Hall exchange jerseys after 49ers vs. Jets matchup
Brock Purdy was efficient during San Francisco's season-opening 32-19 win against the Jets. He completed 19-of-29 for 231 yards. On the other end, Purdy's former Iowa State Cyclones teammate and roommate, Breece Hall, tallied 54 rushing yards on 16 carries, resulting in one touchdown.
After the game, the duo shared a conversation, took a picture and swapped jerseys.
Hall and Purdy roomed together in Iowa alongside teammate Mike Rose. During an interview with ESPN, Rose revealed how competitive Purdy and Hall were and how the quarterback pushed the running back to improve.
"It definitely got competitive. Breece and Brock would definitely go at it. They were always trying to one-up each other, whether it was Madden or anything.
"Brock was always harder on Breece to get him to come along a little bit, just like with football and stuff. Brock was the perfect example of how to go about it. Brock was kind of like a good mentor for Breece. I think Brock would always poke fun at him. He always pushed Breece in that way to become more of a pro and stuff like that."
The Iowa State career of Brock Purdy
In 2018, Brock Purdy earned ESPN Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors. However, to win that award, he fought from the bottom of Iowa State's depth chart as their QB3.
Purdy finished his Iowa State career with 12,170 passing yards for 81 touchdowns and 1,177 rushing yards for 19 touchdowns. During a news conference, he highlighted the chance he received from Cyclones coach Matt Campbell as a career-defining opportunity.
“It’s been the story of my life, being overlooked in high school, I wasn’t a high recruit. All I needed was a shot and an opportunity, and coach [Matt] Campbell gave it to me at Iowa State and sure enough life is repeating itself. I was drafted last, went to the Niners and got an opportunity.”
Brock Purdy was picked No. 262 in the 2022 NFL Draft before becoming San Fransisco's starting quarterback. He was a step away from winning the Super Bowl last season.
