West Virginia vs. Cincinnati: box score, stats, game summary and more ft. Nicco Marchiol

West Virginia used a couple of key defensive scores to launch an upset on the road at Cincinnati, 31-24.

The Mountaineers (5-4, 4-2 Big 12) came in off a win over Arizona and won't face any of the Big 12's top squads in their final weeks. Neal Brown's team could still end up with a 7-5 or 8-4 campaign, which would likely aid his job security significantly.

Meanwhile, Scott Satterfield's surprising Bearcats (5-4, 3-3) have a tough back end to their schedule with upcoming games against Iowa State and Kansas State. UC has now two consecutive losses, as they came in after a 34-23 loss to Colorado. The Bearcats will likely be in a battle for bowl eligibility.

After Cincinnati scored first and took a second possession deep into West Virginia territory, the Bearcats seemed to be on their way. But a 79-yard pick-six score from Anthony Wilson Jr. knotted the score and opened up WVU's momentum.

West Virginia then added the next 17 points to take a 24-7 lead on an 8-yard TD run from Marchiol in the middle of the third quarter. Sorsby threw a long touchdown and added a TD run to pull within three points with 9:42 to play. Cincinnati even had the ball back, but West Virginia sacked QB Sorsby and recovered the loose ball in the end zone for a game-sealing TD.

West Virginia's next game is a home tilt with a Baylor team that is likewise trending toward the middle of the Big 12 standings.

Cincinnati will next travel to face No. 17 Iowa State. The best shot at another win for the Bearcats may be the regular season home finale against TCU.
