What bowl game does Oklahoma play in? Looking at Sooners' postseason matchup
The Oklahoma Sooners' season was a rollercoaster of highs and lows, finishing the regular season with a 6-6 record (2-6 in Southeastern Conference). The team started strong with dominant wins over Temple, Houston and Tulane. However, OU struggled in SEC play, including tough losses to top-ranked Texas and Tennessee. But it also had a decisive 24-3 victory over Alabama.
Their mixed season put the Sooners out of contention for the newly introduced 12-team College Football Playoff field. However, they made sure to win six games and secure a bowl game for themselves.
What bowl game does Oklahoma play in?
For the 26th season in a row, the Oklahoma Sooners will be playing a bowl game, continuing the rich streak. On Sunday, it was announced that the Sooners will play in the Armed Forces Bowl against the Navy Midshipmen. The game will take place on Dec. 27 at TCU’s Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth. The kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET and can be watched on ESPN.
This will be the 58th bowl appearance for the University of Oklahoma, boasting a 31-25-1 all-time bowl record. The last time the Sooners played Navy dates back to October 1965. The Midshipmen won that matchup 10-0.
Sooners coach Brent Venables is excited to play Navy for OU's first Armed Forces Bowl game.
"Our team is excited to play in OU's first-ever Armed Forces Bowl, and the fact that it's in Fort Worth is a bonus for so many of our fans," Venables said via Dylan Buckingham. "Coach (Brian) Newberry has coached Navy to a phenomenal season so far, guiding them to a top-25 ranking for the first time in five years.
"They will present a strong challenge for us, especially in terms of defending their rushing attack, which ranks in the top 10 nationally at 250 yards a game. We're looking forward to diving into film study and getting back to the practice field this week. Bowl season is always an exciting time of year.”
Brent Venables, who is in his third year as Sooners coach, is yet to win a bowl game. In 2022, he lost the Cheez-It Bowl game against Florida State. Last season, they lost the Alamo Bowl against Arizona State.
