What happened to Carson Beck? Exploring Georgia QB going down on the field against Texas
As we hit halftime in the SEC Championship Game between the Texas Longhorns and Georgia Bulldogs, we saw one of the more significant players on the field go down with an apparent injury. Down 6-3 with a single second remaining in the first half, the Georgia Bulldogs were too far for a potential game-tying field goal so the offense remained on the field for a hail mary attempt.
As Georgia quarterback Carson Beck began to feel pressure in the pocket, he began to move around and went to throw the football down the field. However, Texas linebacker Trey Moore hit him in the hand as Beck went to throw the football and the quarterback went down and remained on the ground while the fumble ensued.
The medical staff would evaluate Carson Beck on the field before he got up and headed to the locker room for the halftime break to be further evaluated. While interviewed at halftime, Georgia coach Kirby Smart did mention it appeared to be a hand injury and ruled Carson Beck as questionable. At the time of writing, there is no further update regarding his availability.
If Carson Beck is not able to play in the second half of the SEC Championship due to an injury, expect backup quarterback Gunner Stockton to take over under center.
Can the Georgia Bulldogs win if Carson Beck is ruled out?
While this game has been close, losing Carson Beck would be a massive blow to the Georgia Bulldogs. First off, it would be a significant drop-off in production as Carson Beck has the experience of playing in big games. Second, the mentality of the Bulldogs can go down the tubes if Beck is on the sidelines. Then we have the College Football Playoff rankings. If Carson Beck is injured, that could hurt them if they were to lose this game.
Winning this game was going to be tough for the Georgia Bulldogs at full strength. However, if Carson Beck is ruled out for the second half of the SEC Championship, that puts a lot of pressure on the running game and the defense to keep them in the game and take the lead.
If Beck is ruled out, it is difficult to imagine they can win the SEC Championship and get a guaranteed spot into the College Football Playoff.
