Why was Colbie Young arrested? Closer look at Georgia WR's assault charges
Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Colbie Young was arrested early Tuesday morning in Athens, Georgia. Per ESPN, Young was taken into custody at 4:18 a.m. ET for misdemeanor charges of battery and assault of an unborn child.
He was taken to a detention center by the Athens-Clarke County Police and is still incarcerated as of this morning.
Why was Colbie Young arrested?
An incident report obtained by ESPN stated that a 20-year-old woman who described herself as Colbie Young's ex-girlfriend came to his apartment around 12 a.m. ET on Tuesday. The report noted that when the conversation took a bad turn, Young "grabbed her left arm near her biceps and triceps and physically pulled her out of his room."
The woman claimed that Young began to grab her and "squeeze her torso and abdomen very hard." The officers noted bruising and discolored markings on the bottom of the woman's chest, aligning with her comments.
Young denied ever putting his hands on the woman in any sort of malicious manner and said he simply escorted her to the door of his apartment when the conversation was getting out of hand.
Steven Drummond, Georgia's athletic department spokesperson, referred to the incident as a "pending legal matter" and would not make any additional comments.
Young, a Binghamton, New York, senior, played for the Miami Hurricanes for two seasons before joining coach Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs this past December.
Young has not been the only Bulldog to get into legal trouble this year. This comes just a couple of months after former Georgia wide receiver Rodarious "Rara" Thomas was arrested on family violence charges - his second arrest in two years - and was dismissed from the team on Aug. 1.
Colbie Young caught 11 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns in the Bulldogs' first five games this year. In Saturday's 31-13 victory against Auburn at Sanford Stadium, he had three receptions for 51 yards.
