Purdue football coaching search: Top 5 potential Ryan Walters replacements if he leaves the program

Coach Ryan Walters called it quits following a rough two-year tenure and a disappointing season, and Purdue football is now looking for a new head coach. Walters, who joined Purdue after stints as defensive coordinator at Illinois and Missouri, compiled a 5-19 record, including a 1-11 campaign in 2024.

Purdue is looking to stabilize its program and take advantage of its position within the Big Ten. The Boilermakers couldn’t find consistency with a crushing 66-0 loss to Indiana in their last game.

Here are five potential candidates to lead Purdue football into the future.

Five potential coaches for Purdue

#1 Tim Albin - Ohio

Tim Albin has transformed Ohio into a consistent winner during his four-year tenure. Despite a tough 3-9 start in his debut season, the Bobcats have enjoyed three consecutive campaigns with nine or more wins, including two 10-win seasons.

Albin’s offensive expertise has helped Ohio remain competitive, and his success in navigating challenges and consistently contending for the MAC Championship makes Albin fit for coaching.

#2 Jason Candle - Toledo

Jason Candle has established a reputation as one of the best coaches in the Group of Five conferences. Over eight seasons, Candle has compiled a 72-40 record, with multiple MAC Championships and two 11-win campaigns.

He has produced NFL talent, including standout players like Kareem Hunt and Quinyon Mitchell.

#3 Tyson Helton - Western Kentucky

Tyson Helton is not a stranger to Purdue, having been a finalist for the coaching job in 2023. As Western Kentucky’s head coach, Helton has led the Hilltoppers to bowl eligibility every season since taking over in 2019, winning four bowl games in the process.

Helton is known for his high-octane passing offenses. His ability to revitalize offenses could be exactly what Purdue needs to rebound in the competitive Big Ten.

#4 Barry Odom - UNLV

Barry Odom has quickly turned UNLV into a winning program, leading the Rebels to their first nine-win season in decades during his debut campaign in 2023.

This year, Odom’s team secured 10 victories despite many roster challenges, including the unexpected departure of their starting quarterback. Odom’s ability to engineer turnarounds makes him a strong candidate.

#5 Rich Rodriguez - Jacksonville State

Rich Rodriguez brings experience and a proven record of success, particularly in West Virginia and Arizona. Rodriguez has revived Jacksonville State, leading the program to consecutive bowl-eligible seasons despite its recent transition to the FBS level.

Rodriguez’s offensive tactics and adaptability could bring a spark to Purdue. His extensive coaching history could also attract top talent to West Lafayette.
