Quinn Ewers NFL Draft projection: 3 possible landing spots for Texas QB amid confusion over future
There is some speculation regarding Quinn Ewers’ short-term future. While it seemed like a foregone conclusion that he’d be leaving for the NFL earlier this year, there are questions now.
While he might still go pro, the Texas Longhorns quarterback has fallen behind the top two quarterbacks in the class, Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Miami’s Cam Ward, in most mock drafts. There’s also debate on who the third quarterback taken would be or how high. Jalen Milroe, Carson Beck, and Jaxson Dart are among those in the second group of quarterbacks.
There is also the possibility of Ewers playing a final year of college football. With Arch Manning looking like the future in Texas, Ewers would likely have to transfer.
If Ewers does go to the NFL, he is expected either late in round one or, more likely, as a day-two pick. Things could change between now and April, but these are three possible destinations for the Texas signal-caller.
Three possible landing spots for Quinn Ewers
#3. Cleveland Browns
With Deshaun Watson flaming out in Cleveland, the Browns could be looking at another change at quarterback. They don’t have any long-term answers on the roster. Jameis Winston has been inconsistent, with 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Bailey Zappe don’t seem to be the solution either. Winston and Zappe could leave after the season.
With Watson’s contract limiting their options in free agency, the Browns could look towards the draft. Their position is likely not low enough to get Sanders or Ward, so Ewers could be their next option.
Cleveland has some pieces on offense, although Nick Chubb’s contract also runs out in 2025. But the Browns can not compete unless they get better quarterback play. Drafting Quinn Ewers could be a step in the right direction, although he might need some time to develop.
#2. New York Jets
Is Aaron Rodgers giving it one more shot with the Jets? The answer is still unknown. Regardless, Ewers could be an option in the draft. Indeed, the Jets' record in drafting and developing quarterbacks is shady. Christian Hackenberg, Sam Darnold, and Zach Wilson are the latest examples.
But Ewers might have a couple of things going for him. Rodgers said he would be open to mentoring a young quarterback if he comes back for one more year. On the other hand, Ewers wouldn’t be carrying as high expectations as Darnold and Wilson from the get-go, giving him time to settle into the tough New York market.
#1. Los Angeles Rams
The Rams look like a perfect destination for Ewers. With Matthew Stafford expected back for at least one more season, he would not be pressed into playing immediately. In that scenario, he would have time to develop and learn the nuances of pro football.
He would also be sitting behind a good, veteran quarterback and would get to learn Sean McVay’s offensive system. The Rams also have a good supporting cast, with wide receivers Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua and running backs Kyren Williams and Blake Corum in place.
LA has the pieces to compete for years, but they need to add a young quarterback. Quinn Ewers could fit the bill.
