DJ Lagway Transfer Portal: 5 landing spots for Florida QB if he leaves the program ft. Texas A&M, AuburnĀ
DJ Lagway has played a large role in the Florida Gators' run of success in the last couple of weeks. But, could the freshman quarterback leave the program in 2025?
Lagway was openly committed to staying the course with coach Billy Napier after the Gators' upset win over the LSU Tigers a few weeks ago, but given his talent, quarterback openings and the long road back to national relevancy in Gainesville, Lagway could decide to explore other options.
Here's a closer look at five landing sports if DJ Lagway decides to move on via the transfer portal.
5 landing spots for DJ Lagway via the transfer portal
#1. Texas A&M Aggies
It's been no secret that there was mutual interest between DJ Lagway and the Aggies during last year's recruiting window. The Willis High School product visited College Station several times before finally deciding on Florida thanks to Napier and an NIL deal.
Even if Texas A&M missed out the last time, they would probably be open to snatching Lagway away from their SEC rival this time around as well. The Aggies do have 247Sports four-star commit Brady Hart joining the team in 2025 while freshman quarterback Marcel Reed has helped the team contend for the conference title. However, Lagway's athleticism and ability could be seen as an upgrade over either of them.
#2. Auburn Tigers
Yes, the Tigers got a commitment from highly sought-after Deuce Knight, flipping him over from Notre Dame. However, there is one thing that Knight and fellow Tiger quarterbacks Walker White and Hank Brown share: Inexperience as starting quarterbacks at the collegiate level.
DJ Lagway hasn't only been a starter, but also a successful one at the University of Florida, with 1,477 yards for nine touchdowns and six interceptions. While his numbers may not be eye-opening, his performances in upsets over LSU and Ole Miss reflect comfort for such a young quarterback.
#3. Missouri Tigers
After a disappointing season, the Tigers would make a statement by jumping on DJ Lagway for the 2025 season. With Brady Cook and Drew Pine leaving, there's a void to be filled at quarterback for a team one year removed from an 11-2 team that beat Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl Classic.
Mizzou has Junior Sam Horn still on the roster, while four-star prospect Matt Zollers has committed to the Tigers. Neither has sizable college experience. Lagway was offered a scholarship by the school last year, so there was mutual interest. Without a crowded quarterback room, this move could make sense.
#4. Miami Hurricanes
Lagway's college career started with a lopsided loss to the Hurricanes, but if he decides to leave, he could very well be next in line. Senior Cam Ward is expected to be taken at the top of the 2025 NFL draft and there is no surefire option to succeed him.
Reese Poffenbarger is currently the second stringer, while four-star commit Luke Nickel is joining next year. Miami has other options including Jacurri Brown and Emory Williams, both of whom saw the field in 2023. Lagway's potential is just so high that if he went to Miami, he might just end up beating them out.
#5. Alabama Crimson Tide
Yes, the Crimson Tide has already landed the top quarterback commit in Keeland Russell. However, there's little more in their quarterback room. With Jalen Milroe likely to declare for the draft, DJ Lagway could find himself in a favorable spot to take over in Tuscaloosa thanks to his collegiate experience.
In a program with a "championship or bust" mentality, there isn't much time to groom a young quarterback, especially after a down 2024 season. If Lagway lands in Alabama, he could help Kalen DeBoer find some much-needed stability.
