DJ Lagway Transfer Portal Prospects: 5 possible options for dynamic QB if he leaves Florida feat Texas A&M
It’s safe to say that this season has not been particularly peachy for quarterback DJ Lagway. The Florida Gators have a 6-5 record (4-4 on conference play) with Lagway putting up good numbers over the past two weeks in wins against LSU and Ole Miss. Those results had people scratching their heads and wondering why wasn't he named the full-time starter much earlier.
Now, instead of preparing for the playoffs, the Gators are just looking ahead to 2025. Most of the team’s rough season arguably falls on head coach Billy Napier, though he has been confirmed to remain as head coach for the 2025 season.
It’s subsequently not entirely out of the question that Lagway may decide to leave Gainesville for greener pastures.
Here are some of the options DJ Lagway could consider via the transfer portal.
5 transfer portal prospects for DJ Lagway if he leaves Florida
#1. Texas A&M Aggies
DJ Lagway is from Texas, but the Longhorns already have their quarterback for the next few years in Arch Manning. So going to their bitter rivals in College Station makes the most sense. He may have to navigate a logjam at quarterback with Brady Hart also joining the Aggies in 2025 while freshman Marcel Reed has shown flashes of potential this season, but Lagway is considered an upgrade over both.
The Aggies have also shown they aren’t afraid to spend big to get a star on their team.
#2. Georgia Bulldogs
Carson Beck is leaving for the NFL after this season, so Lagway could just slot in and be the man right away. His arm talent could prove to be a big asset for Kirby Smart’s offense and his ability to run may add a new dynamic to the Bulldogs.
#3. Missouri Tigers
The Tigers have disappointed so far this season, currently sitting in 8th place in the SEC with an 8-3 record (4-3 in conference play). Adding Lagway may be the move Eliah Drinkwitz needs to inject life back into this team that went 11-2 the previous year. He won’t have much competition next season either as Brady Cook and Drew Pine are both leaving after this season.
#4. Miami Hurricanes
Miami is just a five-hour drive from Gainesville, so this could be on Lagway’s radar if he does decide to enter the portal. Cam Ward is leaving after the season and is expected to be one of the top quarterbacks taken at the 2025 NFL draft and there is still no clear-cut successor. Lagway could slot in and take over the Hurricanes' high-powered offense that leads the ACC.
#5. Florida Gators
It’s only a two-game sample size, but the potential is there for both DJ Lagway and Billy Napier, so running it back could also be an option. Napier may be in the hot seat, but giving Lagway full-time starter duties may be the move that saves his job. Also, a new coach would want to at least have one full season with Lagway before letting him explore his options outside of Gainesville.
