Senior Bowl History
The Senior Bowl, inaugurated in 1950 at Gator Bowl Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida, quickly found its home at Mobile's Ladd–Peebles Stadium from 1951 until the 2020 edition. In 2021, the game moved to Hancock Whitney Stadium on the Mobile University of South Alabama campus. Notably, it served as a groundbreaking opportunity for players to openly receive pay, starting with the inaugural 1950 game, where participants earned $343 or $475, depending on the outcome.
Historical pay increased over the years, peaking in 1988 at $1,500 and $1,750. Participation was initially limited to seniors no longer eligible for college football, aligning with the game's role as the players' first chance at paid athletic participation. Notably, the game's scheduling in January has been consistent, traditionally preceding the NFL's Super Bowl since 1967.
Television coverage began with CBS acquiring rights from 1952 to 1954, but NBC's first national broadcast occurred in 1958. ESPN took over in 1982 until the NFL Network took charge in 2007. Noteworthy was the 1958 game, where players and key figures were commissioned as Honorary Admirals and Colonels in the Alabama State Navy and Militia, respectively, in recognition of national television coverage.
Sponsorship evolved, with Delchamps, Food World, Under Armour, and Nike supporting the game. Reese's took over in 2014 and extended its sponsorship to 2020. The Senior Bowl takes center stage at the vibrant Hancock Whitney Stadium, a 25,450-seat multi-purpose venue on the University of South Alabama campus in Mobile, Alabama. Since the 2020 season, it has been the proud home of the South Alabama Jaguars football program. Replacing the city-owned Ladd–Peebles Stadium, Hancock Whitney Stadium stands on the west side of the campus, adjacent to essential football facilities like the field house, practice fields, and the state-of-the-art Jaguar Training Center—the largest covered practice facility in Alabama. The stadium, named after bank holding company Hancock Whitney, provides a dynamic and modern backdrop for the prestigious Senior Bowl events.
