"Soft"; "This sport is cooked": Fans accuse Boston College QB of quitting on his team in middle of 2024 season
Boston College QB Thomas Castellanos is facing criticism from college football fans after reports surfaced of his plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal mid-season. Castellanos stepped away from the program after being benched on Saturday, according to On3, and head coach Bill O’Brien confirmed that Grayson James would take over as the starting quarterback.
On Wednesday, O’Brien announced in a Zoom call that Castellanos had not rejoined the team and would not travel with Boston College for their next game against SMU.
Some fans took to social media to accuse Castellanos of "quitting on his team," with one fan posting on X/Twitter:
“Nothing worse then a player quitting on your team. Especially in the middle of a season.”
‘Wow this sport is cooked,” another fan wrote. “Remember watching him weeks 1-3 like damm he tuff.”
“Soft,” one fan said.
“What has happened to our sport??” another fan wrote.
“That’s a sucka move,” a fan said.
“It's a tough decision, but wishing Thomas Castellanos all the best in finding the right fit for his talents,” one fan wrote.
Castellanos, in his second year with Boston College, showed significant improvement from 2023. In eight games this season, he recorded 1,366 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, five interceptions, a 61.5% completion rate, 194 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.
Boston College’s Thomas Castellanos has had a busy journey
After one season at UCF, Thomas Castellanos spent the past two seasons as Boston College’s starting quarterback. Last year, he put up impressive numbers, passing for 2,248 yards with 15 touchdowns (and 14 interceptions) and rushing for 1,113 yards with 13 rushing touchdowns. That helped the Eagles reach a 7-6 record under coach Jeff Hafley.
This season, consistency has been an issue. In last week’s game against the Syracuse Orange, after completing just 2-of-7 passes early on, coach Hafley made a bold move and subbed in Grayson James O'Brien.
The switch paid off — as James went 5-for-6, passed for 51 yards and threw a touchdown. Down 21-14 at the time, the Eagles rallied to score touchdowns on three straight drives, clinching an exciting 37-31 victory.
