Steve Sarkisian once revealed alternate career path if it was not coaching football at college
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian has become one of the most prominent college football coaches. Having begun his career as a quarterbacks' coach at El Camino in 2000, Sarkisian has had quite a journey before eventually taking up the Longhorns' job in 2021.
Sarkisian once revealed what his plans would have been if he hadn't become a college football coach.
Sarkisian was asked in March last year about an alternate career choice on the Bussin' With The Boys podcast.
"I'd probably be a high school teacher and a high school coach. I really would," the Texas coach said [00:04:13].
Sarkisian was then asked whether he would have coached a different sport like baseball or kept with football.
"Probably, both," Sarkisian responded. "You know, when you're a high school coach, I mean, in California, especially, you gotta do it all."
"You got gym class, you're probably coaching football, you're probably coaching baseball and you might be coaching freshman basketball, too. I mean, you gotta do it all."
Sarkisian had briefly played for the Canadian Football League's Saskatchewan Roughriders. He explained that he worked as a substitute teacher during the CFL offseason since he felt coaching was his calling.
Sarkisian is in his fourth season as Texas coach. At the time of writing, he has compiled a 31-15 record with the Longhorns.
Steve Sarkisian's Texas suffers first defeat of 2024 season vs. Georgia
Steve Sarkisian's Texas entered Week 8 of the 2024 season as the top-ranked team in the country. The Longhorns had won six straight games and were the favorites to take down the Georgia Bulldogs at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
However, Texas suffered its first defeat in Week 8, losing 30-15 against Kirby Smart's Bulldogs. The defeat saw the Longhorns drop to No. 5 in the latest rankings.
While Texas is still on course to reach the College Football Playoff this season, Sarkisian will want his team to get back to winning ways when the Longhorns travel to face Vanderbilt in Week 9 on Saturday.
