“That’s horrible” “RIP”: CFB fans mourn death of ex-Kansas State coach at the age of 62
The college football world got some horrible news on Tuesday afternoon as it was announced that coach Dana Dimel passed away on Tuesday morning in his sleep.
His agent, Pete Roussel, released a statement earlier this afternoon confirming the news and discussing his friendship with Dana Dimel.
"Dana Dimel passed in his sleep this morning," Roussel began his statement with a confirmation of the news. "His passing is gut-wrenching. Dana was my first client over a decade ago and the single most enjoyable client to be with after a win. Some of the games he called at K-State wwere remarkable and he never cared about receiving individual credit."
Rousell also mentioned that Dimel was a family man and that his presence was larger than life for those around him.
"Dana loved his wife. He absolutely adored his children. He was one of the most positive people I knew, and he was unafraid of any challenge. He had an incredible zest for life, one that would make those around him smile time and time again. I will miss Dana more than words can express," he added.
People took to social media and shared their condolences.
"Beautiful words to describe our shared friend. That's exactly who he was. The last time I saw him in person, we were sitting in our bar from his time in Manhattan and laughing our asses off." One person responded
"Great man. Was my coach in college, offered both my sons. Was true to his word, honest in all dealings and a credit to his profession. Prayers for his family." Another user commented
Support and kind words continued to roll in.
"I've known him since 7th grade. I'll never forget him beating all of the coaches in sports trivia. He knew everything about football, baseball, and basketball. He was an outstanding person, and overcame a very difficult family situation growing up. RIP." One person wrote
Where did Dana Dimel coach?
Dana Dimel served as a senior offensive assistant for the Illinois Fighting Illini this season. He previously was part of the UTEP Miners but also coached Houston, Wyoming, and Arizona. However, he is more known for his time at Kansas State. Dimel was originally an All-American offensive lineman and would later become Bill Snyder's coaching staff member.
Dimel rose to be the Wildcats' offensive coordinator and spent 20 years with Kansas State in two stints. During that time, he was part of 12 bowl teams and the 2012 Big 12 Champions.
