owls-football" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-is-sponsored="false">Florida Atlantic University has announced the dismissal of football coach Tom Herman following a disappointing 2-8 record in the 2024 season. The move was confirmed by Brian White, FAU's vice president and director of athletics, who emphasized the program's commitment to a higher standard of success.
"I extend my appreciation to Tom Herman for his dedication to our university and our student-athletes," White said. "I informed Tom of my decision this morning and then met with the staff and team. We firmly believe in our ability to win championships and compete for bowl games, and that remains our standard."
Thomas Herman III, born June 2, 1975, is a veteran college football coach known for his offensive innovation. He previously served as the coach for Texas and Houston and brought with him a reputation for offensive innovation. However, he struggled to find success at FAU.
Tom Herman's offensive scheme
Tom Herman’s offensive strategy is rooted in the spread formation, but it incorporates a power-based approach. His system emphasizes a downhill running game to draw defenders in, creating opportunities for passing over the top.
One of Herman’s signature achievements was Ohio State’s 2014 national championship run, where he utilized two backup quarterbacks, J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones, to great success.
Under his leadership, Houston's Greg Ward Jr. emerged as one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the nation. Herman’s offense frequently employs the shotgun formation, keeping defenses guessing with its dynamic, high-tempo style.

Sam Houston State (2001–2004)
Herman helped develop one of the top offenses in Division I-AA. In 2004, the Bearkats advanced to the semifinals of the Division I-AA championship, finishing 11-3. The team ranked second nationally in passing offense and fifth in total offense.
Texas State (2005–2006)
As offensive coordinator, Herman led Texas State to prominence, with the team ranking eighth nationally in scoring during the 2005 season. The Bobcats made their first-ever Division I-AA playoff appearance, and quarterback Barrick Nealy was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award.
Rice (2007–2008)
Herman joined Rice as an offensive coordinator, where he tailored one of the most productive offenses in the nation. In 2008, Rice ranked in the top 10 nationally in passing, scoring and total offense. Tight end James Casey had 111 receptions, while quarterback Chase Clement was named Conference USA MVP.
Iowa State (2009–2011)
At Iowa State, Herman’s offense set records, including a 52-point game against Texas Tech, the most by the Cyclones against a conference opponent in decades.
Quarterback Austen Arnaud and running back Alexander Robinson finished as some of Iowa State's all-time statistical leaders.
Ohio State (2012–2014)
Herman served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Urban Meyer, leading Ohio State to a national championship in 2014. He won the Broyles Award, being recognized as the nation’s top assistant coach, for his role in developing an explosive offense led by J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones.
Houston (2015–2016)
Herman’s tenure at Houston was marked by immediate success. In 2015, he led the Cougars to a 13-1 record, including a Peach Bowl victory over Florida State.
Houston also achieved notable wins over Oklahoma and Louisville in 2016. His overall record at Houston was 22-4, with a perfect 6-0 mark against ranked opponents.
Texas (2017–2020)
Hired in 2016, Herman led Texas to four straight bowl victories, including a Sugar Bowl win over Georgia in 2018. Under high expectations, Texas struggled for consistency and Herman was dismissed after the 2020 season. His record at Texas was 32-18.
Chicago Bears (2021)
Herman joined the Bears as an offensive analyst but left after the team hired a new coach in 2022.
Florida Atlantic (2023–2024)
Hired to rebuild the program, Herman’s time at FAU was disappointing. Over two seasons, the Owls went 6-16, including a 2-8 start in 2024. His tenure ended after a loss to Temple.
FAU football 2024 season overview
The 2024 season has been a challenging one for FAU, currently 2-8 overall and winless in the conference. Key players like quarterback Cam Fancher led the team with 1,528 passing yards, while running back CJ Campbell Jr. recorded 594 rushing yards. Wide receiver Omari Hayes had 525 receiving yards. However, their efforts were not enough to turn the season around.
Tom Herman was hired in December 2022, and tasked with rebuilding the FAU program after the departure of Willie Taggart. However, Herman's tenure fell short of expectations. Across nearly two seasons, the Owls managed only a 6-16 overall record and a 3-11 mark in conference play.
Tom Herman out at FAU: What’s in store for the Owls’ football program?
The search for a new coach is already underway, with White noting that the process will be conducted with confidentiality.
"A national search begins immediately," he added. "With the integrity of the search in mind, I will have no further public comment until the announcement of the Owls' next head football coach."
Associate head coach and special teams coordinator Chad Lunsford is expected to step in as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
