Top 10 Indiana memes cracking up the Internet after Curt Cignetti crumbles against Notre Dame

Indiana Hoosiers coach Curt Cignetti became the target of countless memes after his bold pregame remarks backfired during Friday night’s showdown with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Appearing on ESPN’s College GameDay before kickoff, Cignetti said:

“We don’t just beat Top 25 teams; we beat the sh*t out of them.”

Unfortunately for Cignetti, the game didn’t go as planned. Notre Dame made history with a decisive 27–17 victory over 10th-seeded Indiana in the first-ever on-campus College Football Playoff game.

For Cignetti, who had issued a fiery warning to Notre Dame earlier that day, the defeat was a tough pill to swallow and an even tougher moment to explain.

The Internet wasted no time capitalizing on the irony of his comments, flooding social media with memes that left fans in stitches.

Some fans didn’t hold back their criticism.

Others turned to humor to sum up the game.

Curt Cignetti reflected on the bittersweet conclusion

Indiana coach Curt Cignetti stepped into the press conference room at Notre Dame Stadium after his team’s season-ending loss to the Irish and reflected on the bittersweet conclusion.

“All good things come to an end,” Cignetti said [H/t SI]. “And when you're my age, you've seen it all. And I have a lot of guys hurting in there but a part of life is learning how to deal with disappointment the proper way and come back a stronger person because of the experience. You never get everything you want in life. That's how life is.”

Cignetti also credited Notre Dame’s defense for their dominance.

“Defensively they pretty much suffocated our offense until the last minute and a half of the game. And their skill guys made good plays. They played well. And they beat us.”

With the win, the seventh-seeded Irish advanced to the quarterfinals of the 12-team playoff, improving to 12-1 with their 11th consecutive victory since a Week 2 loss to Northern Illinois. Meanwhile, Indiana’s dream season ended at 11–2.
