Top 10 QBs to watch out for in Week 9 of college football ft. Shedeur Sanders
College football QBs are having massive seasons, and Week 9 looks like another step in that narrative. While several of the nation's top teams will be off this week (Georgia, Tennessee and Clemson, among others), there's a wealth of top passers in action in Week 9. Here are 10 to watch for this week.
Top 10 QBs to watch for in Week 9 of college football
#10. Chandler Morris, North Texas
The 5-2 Mean Green aren't exactly front-page news, but Morris is making them exciting. He transferred in from Tulane and is among the nation's top QBs. Morris is second in the nation with 2,424 yards passing and 23 touchdowns.
Morris is fresh off his third 400+ yard passing game of the season. He has thrown at least two touchdowns in each game. Lost in the shuffle, he's also rushed for 140 yards and three more scores on the ground. Morris' game with Tulane should be quite a show.
#9. Tyler Shough, Louisville
Fresh off a near-upset of Miami, the uber-efficient Shough deserves some credit. The Oregon and Texas Tech transfer has thrown for 2,016 yards and 18 touchdowns. Meanwhile, he's thrown just three interceptions in 234 passes. UL's game with Boston College has two excellent passers.
#8. Thomas Castellanos, Boston College
Speaking of which, Castellanos is another fascinating player. He's fifth in the nation in QB rating. With 1,188 yards and 14 touchdowns, Castellanos' 9.4 yards per pass attempt is one of the top rates in the nation. As noted above, his Friday game will be one of the nation's best QB showdowns.
#7. Will Howard, Ohio State
The Kansas State transfer has a tough spot this season running the talented Buckeye machine. Despite the loss, Howard has played well. His 73.3% completion rate is third best in the nation. Howard is fourth nationally in QB rating, and his 1,574 yards and 14 touchdowns attest to his solid play. OSU faces Nebraska this week.
#6. Drew Allar, Penn State
Allar has shined for the undefeated Nittany Lions. Always a solid game manager, Allar is sixth in the nation in QB rating. His 10.2 yards per pass attempt are fourth best in FBS. His 70.5% completion percentage is seventh. He has thrown for 1,492 yards and 11 scores and rushed for 121 yards and three scores more. Penn State plays at Wisconsin this week.
#5. Kyle McCord, Syracuse
While Kyle Howard has been fine at Ohio State, the QB he replaced starred as well. McCord has helped make Syracuse relevant. McCord has thrown for 2,160 yards and 19 touchdowns. McCord has posted six consecutive 300-yard performances for the Orange. With 339 to 385 yards passing in each of the six games, McCord has been the most consistent passer in the nation.
#4. Quinn Ewers, Texas
The test of a great quarterback is how he responds to adversity. Ewers hit some Saturday in a loss to Georgia. Still, the rocket-armed junior seems to always have an answer. After missing two and a half games with an injury, Ewers has just 1,101 yards and 11 touchdowns. But he'll continue to shine and prove his worth Saturday against Vanderbilt.
#3. Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss
How good has Dart been? Good enough that even coming off a week off, he is still third in the nation in passing yards (2,384). His 11.1 yards per pass attempt is top in the nation, and Dart should produce some explosive plays against Oklahoma this weekend.
#2. Cam Ward, Miami
Ward has been worthy of Heisman Trophy frontrunner status. He's second nationally in QB rating and leads the country with 2,538 yards and 24 touchdowns. Ward has topped 300 passing yards in every game and has yet to connect on less than 63% of his passes or 8.2 yards per pass in any game. He's a star, and Miami's game at Florida State is another showcase.
#1. Shedeur Sanders, Colorado
Shedeur Sanders will be pursuing a bowl game this week as Colorado hosts Cincinnati. Shedeur has consistently lived up to his hype. His 2,268 passing yards are fifth nationally, and his 19 touchdown passes tie for fifth. Most importantly, under his leadership, 5-2 Colorado is headed for its best season since at least 2016.
