The last three consecutive Heisman Trophy winners played quarterback. Here are the top five players at that position who are favorites to hoist the 2024 Heisman Trophy.
Top five college football QBs favorites to win the 2024 Heisman Trophy
#5 Will Howard, Ohio State
Ohio State quarterback is ranked fifth among 2024 Heisman Trophy favorites at +1400, according to Yahoo Sports. Howard will be playing his first season at Ohio State in 2024 with an opportunity to prove himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the Big Ten.
He spent four seasons at Kansas State before entering the transfer portal following the 2023 season. He threw for 2,643 yards last season with 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
He has had some struggles with interceptions throughout his career, but he'll have arguably the best receiver core in his career in 2024. The top targets he would have this season with the Buckeyes include top recruit Jeremiah Smith and Third-Team All-Big Ten wideout Emeka Egbuka.
#4 Dillon Gabriel, Oregon
Dillon Gabriel will have big shoes to fill at Oregon in 2024 after the departure of Bo Nix to the NFL. Nix finished third in Heisman Trophy voting last season, behind Washington QB Michael Penix and last year's winner Jayden Daniels.
Gabriel transferred to Oregon this year after two seasons at Oklahoma and three seasons with UCF before that. Gabriel brings a ton of experience to an Oregon offense that has the potential to be even more explosive than they were last season.
He has thrown for 14,865 yards in his career and thrown for 125 touchdowns as well. Gabriel's odds to win the 2024 Heisman Trophy are at +900, which ranks third among the favorites to win the award.
#3 Carson Beck, Georgia
Georgia Bulldog's Carson Beck will return for his fourth season with the team in 2024 and owns the highest odds to win the Heisman, according to Yahoo Sports. Beck completed his first season as the starting quarterback in Georiga in 2023 but didn't finish as a finalist for the prestigious award.
Now that he would be fully settled into his role as the team's starter, expectations are high for the Jacksonville, Florida, native. He led the SEC last season with 3,941 yards and added 24 touchdowns with a 72.4% completion rate.
Beck lost his top target from 2023, tight end Brock Bowers but will have receivers Dominic Lovett and Rara Thomas returning this season.
#2 Jalen Milroe, Alabama
Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe finished sixth in Heisman Trophy voting last season and is expected to once again be a finalist for the award in 2024. He's entering his fourth season with the Crimson Tide after starting all 13 games he appeared in last season.
He finished last season with a total of 2,834 yards through the air and added 531 yards on the ground. Alabama saw a large number of players exit through the transfer portal after the retirement of Nick Saban, but Milroe elected to stay with the team for another season.
The Crimson Tide brought in Washington wideout Germie Bernard from the transfer portal to join the receiving core. Bernard hauled in 34 passes for 419 yards and two touchdowns last season as a member of the Washington Huskies.
#1 Quinn Ewers, Texas
Quinn Ewers has decided to return to Texas for another season after an extremely impressive season in 2023.
Ewers is second among Heisman Trophy favorites for 2024 at +800, according to Yahoo Sports. Despite not finishing as a finalist for the award last season, Ewers threw for an outstanding 3,479 yards and 22 touchdowns with just six interceptions.
Ewers will be without his top targets from last season, including Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell, along with Longhorns leading rusher Jonathon Brooks.
However, running backs CJ Baxter and Jaydon Blue will return for another season, and Texas brought in transfers Isaiah Bond, Matthew Golden and Silas Bolden to lead the new-look receiving core in 2024.
