Top 5 defensive players in transfer portal that SEC teams should target before 2025 ft. Tacario Davis

The SEC is always recruiting, even within the transfer portal. Defensive players are at a premium given the potent offenses that dominate college football. Setting aside players who have already picked their schools, here are five defensive players that SEC teams should still be targeting in the portal.

5. David Blay, Louisiana Tech DT

Blay is one of those rare players who was completely off the national radar. He opened his college career at West Chester and then transferred to Louisiana Tech. A 300-pound defensive standout, he had 46 tackles and 10.5 tackles for loss. Blay is still learning the game, but his size and explosiveness would play well in the SEC. He's still learning, but has a massive upside that will draw portal notice.

4. Amaris Williams, Auburn DE

A five-star recruit from North Carolina, Williams saw little action as a true freshman at Auburn. In 10 games, he finished with six tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. At 270 pounds, Williams is an imposing physical specimen who has all the tools to be a star. Obviously, he's already been in the SEC, but his portal recruitment presents an opportunity for the league to raid its own talent.

3. James Williams, Nebraska DE

Williams is another player like Blay above. He started at a JUCO, but surfaced at Nebraska. As a redshirt sophomore, he posted 14 tackles, but 5.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. At 250 pounds, he's big and imposing enough to think that his best football is still well ahead of him. Williams has two seasons still to learn and could become a monster on the defensive line in the SEC.

2. Romello Height, Georgia Tech LB

Height is well traveled. He spent two years at Auburn, two more at USC and then spent 2024 at Georgia Tech. Height had 34 tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss for Tech this year. Height has a wealth of experience and will be a Day 1 impact player. He could certainly start for a solid majority of SEC programs.

1.Tacario Davis, Arizona CB

Given the wealth of top quarterbacks and offensive minds in the SEC, a lockdown cornerback is always at a premium. That could certainly be Davis, who has been brilliant at Arizona. With two seasons of all-Big 12 honors, Davis is a 6-foot-4 standout on the outside of the defense. In the last two years, Davis has broken up 23 passes, including an interception.

His height is impressive, and given his ball skills, Davis is probably a Day 1 starter at a majority of SEC schools. There's nowhere more appropriate for a top-flight cornerback than the most watched conference in college football. Davis would be a game changer for several SEC teams.
