Tyler Turner transfer portal: Top 5 landing spots for Oregon DB ft. Oklahoma
No team is immune from the transfer portal, even No. 1 Oregon, with Tyler Turner hopping in. That's right, the Ducks are getting ready for the College Football Playoff, but redshirt freshman Turner announced he's stepping away from the team and joining the portal. While Oregon's season will go on, Turner will now be a sought-after player in the portal.
Turner has played sparingly, starting Oregon's season opener, but totalling seven tackles and a pair of pass break ups in two seasons. Considering the level of talent that Dan Lanning is attracting to Oregon, Turner's best chance for immediate playing time was probably elsewhere. He was a four-star recruit from Texas.
Turner may not feature in Oregon's future now, but plenty of other power conference teams will be interested in taking a flier on his three remaining seasons of eligibility. Here are five likely portal suitors for Turner.
Tyler Turner transfer portal: 5 likely landing spots
5. USC
The Trojans had a disappointing 2024 season, but could definitely use some fresh talent to beef up their team. Off a 6-6 record, every defensive back who had an interception for the Trojans was a senior.
Coach Lincoln Riley has had a disappointing run at USC and needs to turn his luck around in a hurry. A talented defensive back with experience around the league-- and even some insight on its top team-- wouldn't hurt anything. USC could make a run at Turner.
4. Arkansas
The Razorbacks are yet another team off a disappointing season that might go after Turner. Arkansas recruited him in his original round and Sam Pittman could be inclined to circle back. Three of the five Razorback defensive backs with interceptions were seniors.
Again, a 6-6 season built a certain amount of desperation. That's the sort of atmopshere that could be conducive to letting Turner plug into immediate playing time. Turner could jump start his career at Arkansas.
3. Houston
The Cougars had a tough first year for coach Willie Fritz at 4-8. An in-state defensive back with power conference experience could be helpful for the Cougars. Houston lost one of its better defensive backs to the portal in Jeremiah Wilson.
Meanwhile, getting back close to home might carry some currency for Turner. Getting back home and playing at a school where he could see immediate playing time seems doubly attractive. Houston went after Turner out of high school and might go for him again.
2. Baylor
Early in his high school recruitment, Turner committed to Baylor. He ultimately shifted away but could jump back to the Bears now. Baylor finished around the middle of the Big 12 in most pass defense categories. At 8-4, Dave Aranda's team is moving forward.
Baylor is closer to being in the College Football Playoff conversation than the other teams on this list. Just because Turner didn't see much time with the nation's No. 1 team doesn't mean he's necessarily in a hurry to play for an unsuccessful team. Baylor might be a nice compromise of a solid team and ready playing time.
1.Oklahoma
In his original recruitment, Turner came down to a final two of Oklahoma and Oregon. The Sooners might be glad to finish first the second time around. The 6-6 Sooners aren't slated to return any defensive backs with multiple interceptions last season.
OU was 12th in the 16 team SEC in pass defense efficiency in 2024. Coach Brent Venables needs to turn this around in a hurry or his job could be in jeopardy. Turner could help that process along. The Sooners and Turner might just get things linked up this time around.
