Tyler Van Dyke injury: What happened to Wisconsin QB?
The Wisconsin Badgers took a big hit after starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke was ruled out for the season due to a knee injury. An MRI was conducted on his right knee on Sunday, leading to him being ruled out for the season.
The injury took place in the opening drive of the game against No. 4 Alabama on Saturday. Bruce Feldman confirmed the reports on social media. On third down, the senior quarterback went down on a tackle, following which he immediately grabbed his knee. He had to be carted off to the locker room and was seen in crutches on the sidelines.
According to ESPN, Van Dyke has suffered a full ACL tear in his right knee. The timeline of the recovery is not known but he won't be seen again on the field this season.
For the Badgers, Braedyn Locke replaced Tyler Van Dyke against Alabama. He threw 13-of-26 passes for 125 yards and one touchdown. Meanwhile, Van Dyke, who started the game, completed all his five passes for 16 yards before going down.
Saturday's game wasn't the first time Tyler Van Dyke had to miss games due to a knee issue. While playing for Miami last season, he suffered a rare right knee lesion in the game against North Carolina. However, he would later return in the season.
Tyler Van Dyke is likely to take medical redshirt
Tyler Van Dyke was in his fifth year this season and since he has played in less than four games, he's likely to take a medical redshirt. This will give him an opportunity to give a proper season for NFL scouts to judge him too.
On the other hand, the Badgers will give his responsibility to Braedyn Locke, who's a redshirt sophomore. Luckily for the Badgers, they have a bye week, and their next encounter is with No. 11 USC Trojans on Sept. 28.
In between, they'd get Locke to take as many reps in practice as possible and get him up to scratch.
