When does Oregon join the Big Ten? Taking a closer look at Ducks' transition from Pac-12
The Oregon Ducks are among the many programs going through conference realignment. They will be joining the Big Ten in 2024.
The school has been associated with the Pac-12 before its collapse. In a press conference, Director of Athletics Rob Mullens discussed the university's excitement to join the Big Ten.
"We've been working over the last 13, 14 months about getting a great understanding about ourselves - our TV ratings, our reach, our demographics - to make sure that we understood ourselves and were prepared for the changing landscape in college athletics...
And we're proud to be here today and receive this invite, and look forward to the future," Mullens said (h/t Oregon).
When does Oregon join the Big Ten?
The Oregon Ducks will join the Big Ten on August 2, 2024, when the Pac-12 has shut its doors. They are not the only school heading to the Big Ten. The USC Trojans, UCLA Bruins and the Washington Huskies will also make the jump on the same date.
Mullens also discussed why the Ducks decided to join the conference during an announcement in August 2023.
"Accepting membership into the Big Ten Conference is a transformational opportunity for the University of Oregon to change the short and long-term trajectory of our university and athletics department. The stability and exposure of joining the Big Ten is of great benefit...
We look forward to the opportunity for our student-athletes to compete in this conference," Mullens said (h/t Detroit Free Press).
The school will be in the Big Ten for the 2024 fall sports, including college football. This is a monumental move for various reasons as the Big Ten expands.
Further, this allows the Big Ten to have a presence on the West Coast of the United States and control multiple time zones.
