Zach Pyron transfer portal: Top 5 landing spots for Georgia Tech QB ft. Auburn

Almost the minute the college football regular season ended, the transfer portal started whirring for Georgia Tech QB Zach Pyron. Pyron has played occasionally in three seasons at Georgia Tech and has indicated his interest in moving on from the Yellow Jackets.

A standout recruit from Alabama, Pyron has some experience and definite tools. Pyron completed 88 of 155 passes (57%) for 995 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions at Georgia Tech. He also rushed for 271 yards and six more scores on the ground.

He'll be an interesting prospect for teams that value QB mobility and are looking for players who might be ready to compete for a starting job in the spring. Here are five likely landing spots for Pyron.

5. Baylor

Baylor was one of Pyron's favorite schools out of high school. He committed to Baylor for a time before deciding to move on to Georgia Tech. Yes, the staff at Baylor has shifted, but it's wise not to ignore the possibility that it was the school that drew Pyron.

Baylor will likely have QB Sawyer Robertson returning for another season, but if Pyron is willing to back him up, he could earn a shot in 2026.

Given the nature of QB movement and injuries, it's possible Robertson may not stay at Baylor. The Bears remain a long shot, but they could be a good fit for Pyron.

4. Houston

On the other hand, the man who recruited Pyron for Baylor was Shawn Bell. He now coaches at Houston and he might recruit Pyron. Houston was 4-8 this season and scored just 14.0 points per game. A new QB who could jump-start things seems like an obvious recruiting priority for the Cougars.

On the other hand, Pyron's path to playing time would get much less crowded in a hurry if he picks Houston. The top passer on a team who finished with nine touchdowns to 17 interceptions was a senior. Pyron could be a potential day-one impact player at Houston, which might make a match for the school and player.

3. Wake Forest

Wake Forest is also coming off a 4-8 season. Their QB depth chart basically consisted of seniors, and Pyron could be a natural fit. The Demon Deacons may have a coaching overhaul, which would be a potential issue. But Wake hasn't been in a hurry and given Dave Clawson's long-term resume, he might be safe.

Meanwhile, Wake would allow Pyron to stay in the ACC against familiar competition. At the same time, he'd be able to compete for the starting job in spring practice and likely see immediate time. If Pyron wants to remain in the same league, Wake is the team that might make the most sense overall.

2. Vanderbilt

Diego Pavia 2.0? Clark Lea and Vanderbilt have shown what his system can do with a mobile and efficient quarterback. While Pavia may use his Vanderbilt success as a jumping-off place for further NIL gains, Pyron could slide right into his role in Nashville.

The benefits here are obvious. Aside from Pavia (who seemingly has one foot out the door), there's no impediment to playing time. Lea and Vandy's staff have demonstrated their system's fitness for a mobile and accurate veteran passer. Meanwhile, Pyron could play in the nation's best league and for a guy from Alabama, that might have more meaning than some realize.

1. Auburn

On the other hand, Pyron might be up for the mother of all rebuilding projects. The Tigers figure to be in the market for a new QB, with Payton Thorne being a senior. Auburn needs an offensive spark to keep Hugh Freeze's job, and the Tiger offensive guru likes dual-threat QBs.

Again, Pyron is from Alabama, which is probably an important consideration. The chance to start his college career again with a home-state team in the SEC could prove irresistible. Auburn will probably do everything in its power to facilitate QB competition this spring, and Pyron could use that to gain a day-one snap for the Tigers. This possibility is well worth watching.
