10 national captains who failed to perform in the IPL
The beauty of a league like the IPL is the fact that we get to see so many national captains come together and play under one franchise. This has proved exciting at times, especially when we get to see players like MS Dhoni (former Indian captain), Faf du Plessis (South African captain) and Dwayne Bravo (former West Indian captain) all playing under one roof. The excitement is mutual for both the fans as well as the players.
That being said, a lot is expected from a captain wherever they play whether it is in the domestic leagues or for their country. Let’s be honest, it’s not easy to be the captain of your country. They are always expected to be at the top of their game at all times. The margin for error is very small as even a slight slip up could ruin your reputation among the fans.
While some national captains have lived up to the expectations of fans and team management (like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers), some have failed in the worst way possible that has cost their franchise dearly.
Here’s a look at 10 national captains who failed to get going in the IPL.
10. Misbah-ul-Haq
Misbah-ul-Haq has to be considered as one of Pakistan’s most successful captains. He was prolific with the bat and contributed a lot to his team’s success throughout his career. Sadly, he failed to replicate that success in the IPL.
Misbah was part of the inaugural edition of the IPL when Pakistani players were allowed to be a part of the cash-rich league. He was purchased at the auction by Royal Challengers Bangalore. Playing for RCB, he managed to score a measly 117 runs in eight matches with an average of 16.71.
Given that Pakistani players were banned from the league, we never saw him participate in the IPL ever again.
