2016-17 Ranji trophy- fifth round, report: Mumbai and TN run away with bonus points

Rishabh Pant scored a record-breaking century

Mumbai and Tamil Nadu managed to get a bonus point from their wins in the fifth round matches against Railways and Baroda respectively. Tamil Nadu pacers Aswin Crist and K Vignesh set the tone for TN as they dismissed Baroda for just 93 from 71-1. In return, Abhinav Mukund’s century, along with fifties from Baba Indrajith and Dinesh Karthik got them to 337 with a lead of 244. 

Baroda failed to make TN bat again as they were dismissed for 200 giving TN an innings win. Elsewhere at Mysuru, Mumbai trashed Railways by 10 wickets. Suryakumar Yadav’s stroke-filled century and five-wicket hauls from Vijay Gohil and Tushar Deshpande in the first and second innings respectively helped Mumbai win by 10 wickets.

This round was all about Rishabh Pant, who scored created history by scoring the fastest 100 in Ranji trophy. Along with this, he broke several other records, but that was not enough for his team, Delhi, to sneak in 3 points by taking the first-innings lead.

Indian discards Yuvraj Singh, Vinay Kumar, Rishi Dhawan, Abhinav Mukund did well for their respective teams. In the other matches, Punjab, Karnataka, Goa and Assam got the better of their oppositions.

At Raipur: Tamil Nadu 337 beat Baroda 93 and 200 by an innings and 44 runs.

At Mysuru: Mumbai 345 and 24/0 beat Railways 160 and 208 by 10 wickets.

At Cuttack: Chhattisgarh 198 and 162 (SS Gupta 82, Shadab Jakati 4-41) lost to Goa 270 and 94-2 (Asnodkar 41*) by 8 wickets.

At Vadodara:  Vidarbha 176 and 111 (JN Sharma68*, Vinay Kumar 5-28) lost to Karnataka 267 and 209 by 189 runs.

At Patiala: Rajasthan* 323 drew with Odisha 172 and 508/6 decl. (Ranjit Singh 116, SP Senapati 137).

At Trivandrum: Jharkhand* 493 drew with Delhi 334 and 480-6 (Rishabh Pant 135, Unmukt Chand 91, Milind Kumar 65). 

At Jaipur: Kerala* 404/9 decl. drew with Haryana 303 and 315/3 (Nitin Saini 152*, Rajat Paliwal 75).

At Indore: Andhra 341 drew with Services* 446 and 27/0.

At Ranchi: Himachal Pradesh 370 and 210/5 (Robin Bist 52*, Prashant Chopra 43, Samiullah Beigh 3/56) beat Jammu and Kashmir 162 and 417 by 5 wickets.

At Hyderabad: Punjab 319 and 112/3 (Jiwanjot Singh 69) beat Uttar Pradesh 335 and 95 by 7 wickets.

At Delhi: Bengal vs Gujarat- match was postponed due to Delhi smog.

At Kolkata: Assam 171 and 66/1 (Rishav Das 30*, Sibsankar Roy 24*) beat Saurashtra153 and 81 by 9 wickets.

At Delhi: Hyderabad vs Tripura- match was postponed due to Delhi smog.
