2018 ICC U19 World Cup: India thrash South Africa in warm-up match
Half of the warm-up matches of this year’s U19 Cricket World Cup are done and dusted with. While the senior Indian Test team was beaten by South Africa, the U19 team thrashed the Proteas by 189 runs at Christchurch after winning the toss and opting to bat first.
Last tournament’s runners-up weren’t off to the best of starts as they were 61/3 after the dismissals of skipper Prithvi Shaw, Manoj Kalra and Shubmam Gill for 16, 31 and 0 respectively. However, Aryan Juyal and Himanshu Rana stitched a partnership of 138 to put India in a strong position. Rana scored 69 before being dismissed by Jade de Klerk.
Juyal went on to score 86 before De Klerk caught him off Kenan Smith’s bowling. Cameos from the middle and lower order batsmen took India U19 to 332/8 from their 50 overs. The Proteas bowlers conceded a total of 22 extras and Akhona Mnyaka was the pick of bowlers with 3 wickets for 40 runs.
In reply, South Africa U19 were never in the chase as 19-year old Bengal player Ishan Porel completely outplayed them. Barring Jean du Plessis’s 50, the other South African batsmen could not contribute and they were cleaned up for 143. Porel received great assistance from his fellow bowlers. Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Abhishek Sharma picked up two wickets each while Shiva Singh and Anukul Roy took a wicket each.
India U19 will face Kenya U19 next at Christchurch on Thursday in another warm-up match.
