2024 T20 World Cup: 3 players who starred and 2 who flopped in today's India vs USA match ft. Arshdeep Singh & Virat Kohli
Team India held on in a tricky chase as they beat the United States of America by seven wickets at the Nassau County International Stadium in New York on Wednesday, June 12. With the win, they entered the Super Eight stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Rohit Sharma elected to bowl after winning the toss. While the Indian bowlers did their job, the USA batters gave their team a fighting total and even picked up two early powerplay wickets to put some pressure on the visitors. However, the Men in Blue held their nerve and got over the line with 10 balls to spare.
On that note, here are three players who starred and two who flopped in the India vs USA 2024 T20 World Cup match.
#5 Star - Arshdeep Singh
Arshdeep Singh set the tone for India, picking up a wicket off the very first ball of the match. He never eased off from there and went on to provide three more breakthroughs while conceding just nine runs.
Arshdeep didn't concede a single boundary and bowled 17 dots. Barring a couple of wayward overs, the left-armer has been a delight to watch at the 2024 T20 World Cup.
#4 Flop - Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli's run of single-digit scores in the 2024 T20 World Cup continued as Saurabh Netravalkar got him with one that angled away off the opening batter's first ball.
Eager to lay bat on the ball, Kohli flashed at it, only to nick off. The Men in Blue were put under pressure in the powerplay after the former skipper's dismissal, not for the first time in the tournament.
The conditions are seriously testing Kohli, and he hasn't come out on top even once so far in the competition.
#3 Star - Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya's bowling form improved drastically in the second half of the 2024 Indian Premier League, and he has carried that momentum into the T20 World Cup. The all-rounder has been one of the team's best bowlers in the competition.
Hardik picked up two wickets against the USA and threatened to do a lot more. He mixed up his bouncers and cutters well and hit the right areas throughout his spell. The Indian vice-captain bowled 19 dots in his spell.
#2 Flop - Rohit Sharma
After a scratchy and fortunate knock in the tournament opener against Ireland, Rohit Sharma seems to have reverted to the mean of his T20 career, which is frankly not much to write home about.
Rohit never seemed like he'd get accustomed to the pace of the surface. Eventually, one from Netravalkar held up in the pitch, with the Indian skipper spooning a catch outside the circle. He walked back for just three runs.
Rohit's performances will be watched closely going forward in the T20 World Cup.
#1 Star - Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav had racked up failures in his first two matches of the 2024 T20 World Cup, but quality players like him weren't going to be out of the runs for long. In tough conditions, the 33-year-old gritted it out and remained unbeaten on a half-century when the winning runs were hit.
Suryakumar played a couple of his trademark pickup shots over fine leg, but for the most part, he had to double down and rotate strike. With India needing a partnership, he hung in there and played his role well.
