2024 T20 World Cup: 3 records that can be broken in today’s India vs Australia match
Mondays don't get better than this: everything will be on the line when India take on Australia in the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup. Australia don't just need to win but win big to avoid losing their semifinal spot to underdogs Afghanistan.
For India, there's no bigger motivation than cutting short the campaign of a team that beat them in the finals of both the World Test Championship and the men's ODI World Cup in 2023. Amid the heat of the contest, there will also be some massive individual records approaching. Check them out here:
#3 Mitchell Marsh could become the fastest Australian to 500 T20 World Cup runs
Only three Australians have crossed the 500-run mark in men's T20 World Cups - David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, and Shane Watson. Current skipper Mitchell Marsh is 91 runs away from becoming the fourth, thanks to his excellent returns in the previous editions of the tournament.
If he reaches there on Monday, in his 19th match, he'll be the fastest to do so. He'll beat Warner's record of 25 matches. Maxwell took 30 matches (reaching the mark against Afghanistan on Sunday) while Watson took 23. Marsh hasn't been in great form this World Cup but when the stakes are the highest, he might just bring up his best.
#2 Arshdeep Singh needs one wicket to break RP Singh's record
After his two wickets against Bangladesh on Saturday, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh now has 12 wickets from five matches in the 2024 T20 World Cup. His skiddy pace, variations, and ability to keep the betters guessing in the powerplay and at the death have proven to be too good for many a batter.
He now needs just one more wicket to become the highest wicket-taker for India in a single edition of the T20 World Cup. By doing so, he will break former fast bowler RP Singh's record of 12 wickets who reached there in seven matches in 2007. Given how consistent Arshdeep has been, you can't put it past him.
#1 Virat Kohli needs only 43 runs to become the highest run-scorer in T20Is
Despite his underwhelming (but improving) form this World Cup, Virat Kohli is just inches away from a massive record. If he scores 43 more runs against Australia (in his 123rd match) on Monday, he'll go back to the top of the chart to become the highest run-scorer in T20 World Cup history, at least for a while.
The current top-scorer is Pakistan's Babar Azam with 4146 runs after 123 matches. However, his team is already out of the competition. Kohli, with 4103 runs, is likely to have at least one more game after this one. His opening partner and India captain Rohit Sharma isn't too far behind either - 4073 runs in 156 matches.
