3 marquee players Mumbai Indians should target in IPL 2025 auction ft. Jos Buttler
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction is around the corner and the list of players to go under the hammer is out as well. All teams will have their preparations going on in full swing as they look to rope in several key players to build their squads.
Five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) have already set a strong base with the retention of star players like Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma.
The marquee players in the auction list are set to ignite bidding wars between franchises as always and with big names this time around, the excitement only increases.
While Mumbai Indians have already retained a strong core, they will look to add to their strength by targeting certain players from the marquee list to fine-tune the gaps.
Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, here are three marquee players whom MI should target.
3 marquee players Mumbai Indians should target in IPL 2025 auction
#3 Jos Buttler
English wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler has established himself as one of the best openers in the T20 format in the recent past. His explosive and attacking batting makes him a crucial asset for any side in the powerplay overs as he can get the team off to a flying start.
Buttler played a key role for Rajasthan Royals (RR) opening the innings and has the ability to win games single-handedly. He won the Orange Cap as well in 2022, where he amassed 863 runs, including four hundreds.
Mumbai Indians have released Ishan Kishan and will therefore need an opener as well as a wicket-keeper. The conditions at Wankhede are likely to suit Buttler's style of play as well.
#2 Mohammed Siraj
With Jasprit Bumrah in the side, Mumbai Indians will need another quality second pacer, also preferably an Indian, who can shoulder the responsibility along with Bumrah.
Siraj could fit the bill perfectly as their second Indian pacer, as he also brings the experience of having played international cricket in all three formats to the table. Having two senior India international fast bowlers in the side will only add to their strength.
Siraj has played 93 IPL games and has as many wickets as well. He could form a lethal duo along with Bumrah. The inclusion of a quality Indian pacer will also give them some flexibility in terms of bringing in overseas players for other positions in the team.
#1 Yuzvendra Chahal
Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal began his IPL journey with Mumbai Indians before playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and RR. However, he did not get many opportunities back then. While MI have had some quality pacers, they need to bring in a quality spinner, particularly a leg-spinner.
MI released Piyush Chawla and might not buy him back at the auction. They will need a quality leg-spinner to lead their spin attack and bring balance to the side. Chahal is the leading wicket-taker in IPL history with 205 scalps and has been a consistent wicket-taker across seasons.
Yuzvendra Chahal is someone Mumbai certainly need to target at the auction in order to strengthen the spin department.
