3 reasons why CSK must target Jitesh Sharma at IPL 2025 Auction

Swashbuckling wicket-keeper batter Jitesh Sharma has expressed his desire to play for the five-time champions Chennai Super Kings or the Mumbai Indians if the Punjab Kings (PBKS) don't acquire his services in the mega auction. Jitesh has represented PBKS from 2022 to 2024 and was even appointed as the vice-captain of the franchise last season.

One of the most perennial underachievers in IPL history, PBKS only retained Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh ahead of the auction. Jitesh’s batting revolves around high-risk shots and that leads to inconsistency. He had a couple of good seasons for PBKS but his performances dipped significantly in 2024.

Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo on the upcoming mega auctions, Jitesh said that at the mega auction, a player should be prepared to play for any franchise. However when it comes to his personal preference, who won't mind plying their trade for two of the most successful franchises in the tournament history?

“ It is a mega auction, so nothing can be said. A player must be ready to go to any team. But if I don't get a chance in PBKS, then MI [Mumbai Indians] or CSK [Chennai Super Kings] are good options. I like both those teams very much,” Jitesh said.

Jitesh is expected to be on the radar of several franchises but his dream of playing for CSK could actually come true. Given his aggressive nature of batting, Jitesh could be a viable pick for the yellow brigade. Let us have a look at three reasons why CSK should target Jitesh Sharma in the mega auction:

# 1. Jitesh could take up the mantle of the finisher for CSK

Chennai Super Kings have got their balance right in most of the seasons so far which has resulted in their consistent success in the tournament. Considered as one of the greatest finishers in world cricket, MS Dhoni has been part of the franchise since the inception of the competition.

Despite retiring from international cricket in 2020, Dhoni still continues to play in the IPL and has been retained by the five-time champions. However, there is no two way about the fact that CSK needs to groom another finisher who has the ability to destroy any bowling attack.

Jitesh Sharma’s consistency might be questionable but given his power-hitting abilities, he could be groomed by CSK to become their next finisher.

# 2. Jitesh’s fearless mentality and solid keeping technique

CSK is one of the most experienced and balanced T20 sides. Over the years, they have had players who can turn the game with their blistering strokeplay.

However, they need a player who can change the complexion of the game from any situation and that is where Jitesh could come in very handy. He has a fearless mentality and never shies away from expressing himself with the bat.

Besides his attitude as a batter, he is a safe gloveman and could take over the mantle from Dhoni in the long run.

# 3. Jitesh’s connection with Ruturaj Gaikwad

Like several young wicket-keepers in the country, Jitesh Sharma also idolizes MS Dhoni. With Ruturaj Gaikwad having taken over the captaincy from Dhoni, Jitesh, who has a close bond with Gaikwad, expressed his desire to play under his captaincy.

"I would love to play for Chennai Super Kings. Mahi [MS Dhoni] bhai is obviously one of the reasons but because Ruturaj Gaikwad is my good friend. I enjoy playing under him, we share a good bond, and we often discuss cricket together," Jitesh said.

Camaraderie between a player and his captain is very important and his equation with Gaikwad might actually help him realize his potential for the yellow army. It will be interesting to see whether CSK goes after Jitesh in the upcoming auction.
