3 records Jasprit Bumrah can break in BGT 2024-25 after his Perth fifer

India's stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah made a powerful statement in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, leading a remarkable fightback for the visitors in the first Test. Batting first, the hosts struggled, losing five wickets for just 59 runs.

However, key contributions from Rishabh Pant (37) and debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy (41) helped India post 150. In response, Bumrah, leading the Indian attack, was in exceptional form, claiming three wickets in his first four overs, dismissing Nathan McSweeney, Usman Khawaja, and Steven Smith.

Bumrah also removed Australian captain Pat Cummins and completed his five-wicket haul on Day 2 by dismissing Alex Carey. Mohammed Siraj and debutant Harshit Rana played vital roles as Australia were bowled out for 104, handing India a crucial 46-run lead.

With Bumrah securing his second five-wicket haul in Australia, we look at three records the pacer could break in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

#1 Most wickets by an Indian pacer in BGT

The Border-Gavaskar series began in 1996-97 and has seen off-spinner Nathan Lyon (116 wickets) and Ravichandran Ashwin (114 wickets) claim the most wickets. Among pacers, Zaheer Khan leads with 61 wickets, followed closely by Ishant Sharma with 59 wickets.

With the second innings still to be played and four more matches remaining, Jasprit Bumrah has the opportunity to become the Indian pacer with the most wickets in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The 30-year-old has taken 37 wickets in eight matches, including two five-wicket hauls.

#2 Fastest Indian pacer to take 200 Test wickets

Another milestone that Indian pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah could achieve is becoming the fastest Indian pacer to take 200 wickets in Test cricket. The current record is held by Kapil Dev, who reached the milestone in 50 matches. Kapil took 434 wickets in 131 Tests, making him India’s third-highest wicket-taker and the pacer with the most wickets in Test cricket for India.

Currently playing his 41st Test, Bumrah has 178 wickets at an impressive average of 20.16 and could soon surpass Kapil Dev's record to become the fastest Indian pacer to reach 200 Test wickets.

On the other hand, Ravichandran Ashwin holds the overall record for the fastest Indian bowler to claim 200 Test wickets, achieving the feat in just 37 matches.

#3 Most wickets by an Indian on Australian soil in Tests

Jasprit Bumrah has taken 37 wickets in eight Test matches in Australia, making him the fourth-highest wicket-taker among Indian bowlers. By the end of the series, he could become the Indian bowler with the most Test wickets in Australia.

Currently leading the list is Kapil Dev, who took 51 wickets in 11 matches, including five five-wicket hauls. Second is India’s all-time leading Test wicket-taker, Anil Kumble, who claimed 49 wickets in 10 Tests in Australia, featuring four fifers and one 10-wicket haul.

In third place is veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin with 39 wickets in 10 games, while the late Bishan Singh Bedi completes the list in fifth, with 35 wickets in seven matches.
