3 records made in New Zealand's historic win over India in 1st 2024 Test
New Zealand beat India by eight wickets in the first Test of the three-match series at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday, October 20. Chasing 107 for victory, the visitors got over the line comfortably in just 27.4 overs.
After bundling India out for 46 runs in the first innings, the Kiwis gained a massive upper hand. Despite a fightback from India in their second innings, New Zealand once again dominated to restrict India and win the game eventually.
This win also proved to be a historic one for Tom Latham and his men as it came after a very long time. With this, the Kiwis now have a 1-0 lead in the series and will carry momentum into the next game.
After their brilliant win against India in the first Test, here are three records made by New Zealand courtesy of their victory.
#3 New Zealand claimed their first Test win in India in the 21st century
After successfully chasing the 107-run target on Day 5 in Bengaluru, New Zealand scripted history by registering their first Test win against the Men in Blue in India in the 21st century.
The Kiwis had to wait for 36 years to achieve the feat as their last Test win against India in India came in November 1988 when they beat India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Their only other Test win in India came in 1969 and since 1988, they failed to win a single Test against India in India.
#2 Joint fourth-biggest lead taken by a visiting team against India in India
The Kiwis asserted their dominance right from the start of the game as they made full use of the conditions early on to bowl India out for a paltry total of just 46 runs in the first innings.
After a top effort from the bowlers, the batters backed it up equally, amassing 402 runs and taking a massive 356-run first-innings lead.
By doing so, they recorded the joint fourth-biggest lead taken by a visiting team against India in India. In 1948, West Indies had registered a 356-run lead against India at the Brabourne Stadium. In 1958, West Indies had secured a 490-run lead (the highest) against India in Kolkata.
#1 A visiting team chasing a total of 100-plus in India after 24 years
With a colossal 356-run lead after the first innings, New Zealand managed to bowl India out for 462 runs in their second innings despite a fighting effort from the hosts. This meant that the Kiwis needed only 107 runs to win the Test in their final innings.
While they lost skipper Tom Latham and Devon Conway early, Will Young (48*) and Rachin Ravindra (39*) ensured there were no more hiccups in the chase. New Zealand got over the line convincingly with eight wickets to spare.
This is the first time in 24 years that a visiting team managed to successfully chase a total of 100 or more against India in India. The last instance came in 2000 when South Africa chased down 164 runs at the Wankhede Stadium.
