3 records that Shubman Gill broke during his 104*-run knock vs RCB in Match 70 of IPL 2023Β
Shubman Gill powered Gujarat Titans (GT) to an excellent six-wicket victory over the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to finish their IPL 2023 league campaign with a resounding win at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Sunday, May 21.
It was a special night for the cricket fans, who saw two world-class Indian batters, Virat Kohli and Gill, outshine every other 20 players and put up an excellent show. However, Gill, who made a superlative century, left RCB fans reeling as the defeat eliminated them from the IPL 2023 playoffs.
In a must-win encounter, Bangalore were put to bat first. Virat Kohli, who hit a century in the last game, continued his rich vein of form and clobbered a masterful hundred to propel RCB to 197/5 in the first innings.
GT, who were desperate to enter the playoffs with a win on their back, came out with a measured approach. While Wriddhiman Saha lost his wicket in the third over, Gill took a few balls to get his eye in before going berserk.
He targeted almost every RCB bowler and raced away to his fifty in just 29 balls. The opener used his lofted strokes, especially the short-arm jab, admirably well and found boundaries at will. He added a match-winning partnership with Vijay Shankar, who played his part with a 35-ball 52. The two added 123 runs for the second wicket and brought their team closer to the target.
Although Gill saw the end of Shankar, Dasun Shanaka, and David Miller in the span of just 2.5 overs, the youngster remained resolute in getting his team over the line.
With GT needing eight runs in the last over, Gill clobbered Wayne Parnell to a six down the ground to send RCB packing and also brought up a remarkable century in the process. He remained unbeaten at 104 off just 52 balls, smashing five boundaries and eight maximums during his knock.
Gill shattered multiple records during his 104*-run knock and here are the top three records he broke in Bengaluru.
#3 Youngest to 25 fifty-plus scores in T20 cricket
Ever since making his name at the 2018 U-19 World Cup for India, Shubman Gill has elevated his game to the next level, breaking records for fun. Following his special knock against RCB, Gill became the youngest player to notch up 25 fifty-plus scores in T20 cricket history.
At the age of 25 years and 255 days old, Gill has smashed 25 scores of 50 or more in T20s. Pakistan's Ahmed Shehzad (24 years and 75 days old) held the record previously.
#2 Fourth cricketer to smash two consecutive IPL hundreds
It has been a year to remember for Shubman Gill so far. After scoring hundreds in each of the three formats for India prior to the IPL 2023, he continued his rich vein of form in the T20 tournament as well.
Gill, who has smashed 680 runs at an average of 56.67 this season, has also notched up two IPL hundreds as well. The 23-year-old mustered 101 runs against the Sunrisers Hyderabad before smashing another wonderful century against RCB on Sunday. With this, he has become only the fourth player to smash two consecutive IPL centuries in back-to-back innings.
Interestingly, two players achieved the feat in the RCB vs GT game. Virat Kohli's ton against Gujarat in the first innings came a few days after he hit a magnificent century against SRH.
Shikhar Dhawan and Jos Buttler are the two other players to smash back-to-back IPL hundreds.
#1 Highest individual score for GT
Picked up at the draft ahead of the IPL 2022 season, Shubman Gill has been the linchpin for the franchise. The right-hander has been vital for their success and became their first-ever centurion when he scored a ton against SRH on May 15.
During his 101-run knock, Gill became the highest individual run-getter in a single innings for the franchise. However, six days later, he has now surpassed his own record. Gill's recent 104-run unbeaten innings against RCB is now the best individual score by a GT batter in an IPL innings.
